are they really as bad as Sup Forums makes them out to be?
I've had crippling depression and anxiety for years now and I'm currently in a pretty bad rut. I quit my job and now I just sit alone in my room all day, pretty frequent thoughts of suicide as well.
I got out over 3 years ago, but when I was in the military I was on lexapro for the depression/anxiety, and also some other pill to help me sleep (but I can't remember the name). I didn't care for the military which is why I got out, but that's the last time I felt genuinely happy and outgoing. Looking back now I have no idea if it's because I was surrounded by so many friends, or because of the pills. I'm like a complete 180 different person from who I was then.
I feel like I've been wearing a mask for 3 years. For 3 years I've felt like shit after coming off the pills. It's so hard to explain.
I don't like the idea of having to pop pills just to function like a normal fucking person and I hear the longer you're on them, the more they can fuck you up. But I'm starting to think at this point it would be worth it to just feel some form of happiness, even if it's artificial.
ignore the faggots who have never been depressed and don't know what it's like and think you can just walk it off
go back on lexapro. it's breddy gud.
Austin Scott
have u gone to the doctor
Benjamin Clark
Were you breastfed?
Did you have adequate vitamin D as a child? Do you now?
Are you mixed race?
Are you, or were you once, a habitual drug user?
If you answered no to any of the first 2 and yes to the second 2, you are doomed to be a worthless, emotional fuck.
Easton Gutierrez
Hey OP You're good. Depression sucks. But antidepressants are exact and don't have direct cause and effect, it's a crap shoot. I got off of antidepressants and just had to ride out my depression after I found out that pills either make me numb or fell more suicidal.
Having a consistent schedule, exercise, community or human interaction, and a sense of right and wrong abover yourself have been the classical ways to avoid depression. I'm searching for YouTube vids that helped me. Will post soon. Bump
Owen Williams
Try them, it depends on the person. If they don't work after a set amount of time, stop taking them.
Cooper Taylor
Do NOT take psych medication. I was diagnosed with depression and put on that fucking poison, not lexapro but something similar. You do NOT need that shit, big pharmaceutical companies are getting doctors to prescribe this shit to young people more and more. It is not real medicine! Don't fucking take it! You are so much better off learning to be happy without it. It's not impossible. Don't give up and don't go back on fucking psych meds bro.
You don't know shit faggot.
Nicholas Moore

Nathan Ward

Well congrats. You're better than half my ghetto neighbors. At least you see your problem and want to fix it. It's the first step and usually the hardest. Now that you understand it, you can take actions to having a better life.
Why don't you take a seat next to Uncle Hitler and let off some steam.

I was on them but I was an alcoholic so they didn't work

that depends OP. for people who don't need them, they should not be taken. if you have actual chemical deficiency though, take them. they may be intended for you.
Landon Cook
Following up on this. Get help if you need it. Find someone you trust or pay for someone to keep you safe.
Psychology intervention with my depression was an expensive way to learn that pills and listing how I was oppressed didn't help me. It was very expensive and all the pills didn't help.
The best things I learned in my suicide group therapy can be learned in a cheap workbook "Mind Over Mood"
I'm not 100% yet, I need to exercise daily, but I no longer feel suicidal.
Stop being a whiny faggot. Doing things help my depression. When i create something or learn a new skill i feel great.
Instead of being a whiny bitch you should better yourself and improve your life
Dylan Baker
Alright bro i also battle crippling depression i refuse the happy pills what you need to do is get proactive about somthing anything also make sure u leave the house 3-4 times a week go for walks museums i dont know w/e you want itll help trust me all else fails take the pills
Julian Watson
Focus on lowering your standars for happiness Try to find joy in small things you do.
Oliver Bennett
Psych pills are a personal decision, they work on some but not on others. It's your call.
Any treatment you choose, any good doc will recommend that you get 100% sober while trying a new regime. So there's that.
Zachary Bell
I take Lexapro too. I've been on and off a variety of psych meds for about 16 years, and it's the only one that actually sort of works for me and doesn't have weird side effects.
I mean, if you've been feeling like shit for 3 years I would say go back on it. If you feel better, you could start to get your life together and once you do that re-evaluate whether you want to keep taking it.
Personally, even if I'm doing great in life (good job, gf, exercising, etc) when I come off it I just start to spiral, but some people just need that bump to get them back on track.
Anthony Ramirez
also exercise helps alot keeping fit and diet plays a huge roll sorry forgot the most important factors
Zachary Evans
pills won't make you happy. if you're not working try to get a job that has some physical level of work, you want to go home feeling like you didn't spend 8 hours sitting on your arse. if work is not able right now go for a walk every day of at least 1/2 an hour, get out of the house, explore the local territory.
I had similar things in the early 2000's, sometimes I even felt like a ghost, it took a lot of effort to climb above the dark feelings, but it can be done.
Jonathan Reyes
I have been a neet for 4 years of my life. I wanted to end my pathetic life of being a useless leech. But then i realized that my parents invested so much in me. Just so i could turn out to be a loser.
I realized that i had an obligation to achieve something in life.
Alexander Reyes
same issues taking cipralex changed my life don't get waves of murderous rage actually go out and be social i also mix that with peer counseling etc shits getting better used to treat myself with alchohol never going back to that just remember the side effects of depression/anxiety are never as bad as meds i have no med side effects hang in there bro
Jeremiah Anderson
Never take substances you don't know about. Unless you made the drugs yourself, you don't know what acetimenophen does to your body so don't fucking take it.
Bentley Sanchez
There are two resouces you should be aware of. One is The Marketing of Madness, a documentary produced by the Scientology cult: it is very long but the best in its class, despite its authors. The other is Peter Breggin, MD and his books on getting off psychiatric medication intelligently.
Connor Taylor
>Never take substances you don't know about. Unless you made the drugs yourself, you don't know what acetimenophen does to your body so don't fucking take it.

This is the most retarded thing I ever heard.
Have an infection? NO BRO DONT TAKE PENICILLIN YOU DIDNT MAKE THAT
Bentley Allen
Old antidepressants are actually better, see if you can get one that isn't an SSRI if you need to take some pills.
Xavier Nelson
I think it depends on the pills.
I took prozac for about a year twice, but each time it made me like a fucking zombie. I stopped feeling sad, but I also stopped feeling pretty much everything else as well. It also completely killed my sex drive the second time.
Then I had a chance to go on Bupropion, which isn't normally used as an anti-depressant in the UK. It really worked for me. It didn't stop me feeling sad, but it did stop the other effects of depression, the lack of motivation, that kind of crippling despair where you just sit staring into nothingness. It felt like someone had taken a scalpel and cut out the mental cancer, but left the rest of me more or less intact. I still had to fix myself on my own terms, but I wasn't being prevented from doing so anymore.
So maybe just keep trying stuff until you find something that works.
Connor Gray
when someone posts a comment, and it's to inform you of something that pretty much everyone knows by now because it's been repeated so many times, like that shitty Bertrand Russell story about turtles all the way down
everyone has heard that multiple times on all the pseudo-intellectual websites etc
but somebody will post that, as if they are informing you and as if it was some interesting but obscure information only a geek like them could know
it's very popular with pop-philosophy, pop-history, and pop-sci nuggets of information
what's the name for such condescending behaviour?
Jose Lopez
They might be able to help you out. Part of depression is changing your lifestyle as well. Eating better, being more physically and socially active, etc. It's not easy of course. The meds help a bit with regulating your brain chemistry.
Zachary Morales
Try tea and exercise friend
I'm an equipment op and can't take medications of any kind and I'd have blown my brains out long ago if it wasn't for my gym routine to look forward to.
Liam Gomez
do not take any pills for depression, if you really must take something, use psilocybin mushrooms however do not take them unless you try the next things i'm about to write -stay hydrated -get vitamin D from sun exposure -exercise -cut the bullshit food like sodas, fast food and such, these are packed with sugars that have almost 0 nutritional value -eat fruit, vegetables and other nutrient essential foods (like essential amino-acid containing food, nuts) -stop watching porn (fucks with your head, it's basically like a heroin addiction) -once you've started doing all of the above the next step is socializing
depression isn't defacto being sad, it's barely any feeling at all which ends up making you feel like shit start small, start with water (ez as fuck) then work your way up it's a wonder how much things can go wrong unless you fulfill your basic needs if you continue feeling like shit after this then it might be an underlying psychological problem, however that is for another thread
Brody Young
If you consider taking them your entire life, they're good... otherwise find a solution for your depression, oh yeah, but modern psychiatry/psychology don't allow you to search for a meaning in your life as a solution for your depression, just a feigned cold attitude disguised as a maturity that never solves the real problem and make you use drugs for the rest of your life. That's tough, drugs don't cure you, just attack systoms to make you "functional". If you can't look to your own life and not panic/despair/ and be anxious, out of libido - reason why most guys take pills in the first place - I have bad news for you...

OP, u r an idiot if you get medical advice from a bunch a virgin teenagers on a cartoon board.
Anti-depressants helped me A LOT with my own crippling depression. Celexa, Lexapro, Welbutrin worked best for me. They will not make you happy, but they will take away some of the pain and paralysis of major depression.
Good luck bro!

Your job wasn't stressful enough. Work harder pussy.

Genuine Brit psychotherapist here.
I see anti-depressants / anxiolytics as something to be used in combination with therapy or short term use (there are of course exceptions regarding people with long term conditions). In the vast majority of cases, they won't solve your problems, they won't make you happy, but they can help you function by taking the edge off the emotional extremes, allowing you to engage with therapy / make positive changes.
There are many difference types of medication. I'm sure a lot of people's input here is genuine but each person reacts so differently to medication you simply won't know how it will affect you until you take it.
All the advice about exercise, diet, learning new stuff, connecting with people etc is totally valid and encouraged.
I have found with my work that sometimes they're just necessary. Someone who is so anxious they can't watch a TV programme without knowing what's going to happen next just isn't go to take in what's said in therapy.

Pol will call me a degenerate but look into psychedelics. I treat my depression with lsd but there are legal options like 4 aco dmt that you can order off the clearnet. You can micro dose and not even get high to get its effects but where's the fun in that
Mason Peterson
Example of bitch that doesn't want to solve anybody else's problem, otherwise he'll lose his shekels, all psychotherapists/psychiatrists with the exception of a few are exactly like this. And the one's that actually try to solve anybody else's problem is marginalized.

I'm a psychotherapist working on a contract for a private company. I can't even prescribe medication never mind get paid for doing so. There's no advantage to me keeping patients in my care. Whether a person wants to take meds or not is totally up to them.
Joseph Sanchez
Drink more water! Exercise Eat lots of fruit Get sunshine
These are easy wins that will get you better. Exercise is actually super effective, but you need to be careful not to injure yourself when you start exercising, so start slow.
If those 3 things don't work then I would say medication is a sensible approach
You can also try socializing and meditation.
If you are desperate, do all of these.

I'm aware, the one's that prescribe drugs are psychiatrists and not psychologists, I was just saying that you are trained at college to do exactly what you are explaining.
ALSO, look into CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). if you cant afford to see someone about it buy (or pirate) some books on the subject.
Brody Martin
do some shrooms , have a trip buddy with you and you will feel way better the day after. diarrhea may happen.

Does your depression have a specific cause to which you can trace it back, or are you just depressed?

Cameron Thomas
The example I gave is extreme. Most people who present with anxiety / panic symptoms find they can work with me to tackle anxiety / panic / GAD (usually through CBT) without needing to take meds, although some do to help them along the way. I was just explaining that in a few cases, you just aren't going to make any progress because the symptoms of the presenting issues are so overwhelming, it prevents proper engagement with therapy.
Ryan Thomas
this is a good idea, go out into the woods and hang with some good buddies, eat mushrooms. you will feel refreshed

Talk to me about the vitamin d thing, kinda in ops shoes rn with the depression thing. Used to be normal while i was in school. Docs tell me i have really low vitamin D tho. Whats the correlation between that and emotions?

Do you exercise?

i did that with my brothers 2 years ago and it really helped my depression to become way less affecting my personality , brightened up and had the sense of feeling of being connected to nature and everything around me.
can´t really describe it with words , one must experience it at least once in life themselves.
plus giggling like a retard for hours was fun , one of my brothers got the panjeet shins doe kek.

Self-help stuff for anyone that might find it beneficial.
shut the fuck up you shitposting fucking leaf I take antipsychotics clean up my thoughts, I've finally been able to start getting my life together

What do you do about laziness? I can never commit to any of these suggestions whether it be nofap, or just exercising more I can never make a habit out of it.
Jack Sanders
Alright I'm confused now, I thought depression was the inability to feel any kind of emotion, yet I read about people being sad. What do I have if I can't feel anything at all? I've been completely emotionally numb since I was in middle school. My parents died, my brother died, my dog died, but I never felt sad about any of it. The only way I know that emotions are a thing, is because I remember feeling them when I was younger. I'm 100% physically healthy, /fit/, have a well-paying job, good friends and I've never touched drugs. The only reason I haven't killed myself yet is because there's potential the future will be better. Will anti-depressants do anything at all?
Jose Campbell
fucking degenerates claiming their dirty hippy narcotics will cure depression, you're worse than any pill pushing RX company and causing more harm than they do with your retarded psuedo science. dont take illegal drugs to self medicate, hippies are literally hitler. fucking die

ask your doctor for a short high dose vitamin D therapy, after that try to get enough sun and daylight like the anons say
Nolan Jones
>are they really as bad as Sup Forums makes them out to be?
Most "depression" is caused by:
>lack of exercise >lack of sunlight >lack of social interaction >lack of sleep; and >lack of proper nutrition
Start eating proper meals, cut refined sugar, get yourself a girlfriend, workout and go out to the beach with friends (or another outdoorsy activity if you don't live on the beach).
Do all these things and I doubt you'll be 'depressed' anymore.
Taking anti-depressants MAY and I stress MAY trick your brain into thinking that you're healthy BUT only temporarily. This comes at the cost of potentially fucking you up even worse.
Supposing that you have made a concerted effort to do the things I said above for AT LEAST two years and still feel "depressed" than maybe, MAYBE you might consider trying an anti-depressant.
Sometimes, unfortunately people really do need these drugs because of something that that person can't change. But 99.9999 times out of 100 it's poor lifestyle causing their depression and that should be addressed first.
Aaron Young

The thing of a habit, is that they eventually become nature, if you can quantify how long have you fapped + did nothing + time you have been lazy and compare that with the time you're doing a different activity you'll note that... you can change habits but not your nature. It's a struggle against yourself you have there senpai. If you can avoid each time you search for a momentary pleasure just because you feel down, and make a better use of your time, you're already making progress.

Being happy is overrated, you're not on this earth to enjoy the trip, you're here to pine and toil. Compare what you call struggle with what people had to cope, say, on the Middle Ages: >Total darkness, you hear a scream in the middle of the night with no moon, you struggle to live your live to the fullest not knowing what kind of fucked up shit might happen, being ready to go from one extreme to another in a split-second. People want to live for pleasure, that is not natural is just a modern wishful thinking that never gets realized and people think that because the guy on the TV ad is running around on the new BMW with 3 hookers they life need to be the same otherwise they feel unhappy. The thing is, your ancestors didn't lived and struggled by pure luck, they knew what the fuck they were doing as sure as hell they didn't took no pill. Only the red ones.
Ayden Flores
I tried the exercise thing and its true it helps. Ran at least a few miles but after a week or so I lose interest been through this cycle so many times, I guess I have to really make it a hard habit.

Promise me you'll never take anti-depressants, they are literally the worst thing. I'm on them right now, have been for like 4 months.
I've never had anxiety, but ever since I started taking Zoloft (anti-depressant) I've started getting anxiety (when I miss a dose), it turns you numb, into a brain-dead zombie. And if you stop taking it you get a sensation known as "brain-zaps", which feels like an electrical current that goes through your body really quick
i hate it
Zachary Perry

im in the exact same boat user, word for word.
I dont have any good answers for you though im sorry, im sitting in my room now (had to move in with my dad) going through the same shit, with a pack of Quetiapine next to me, which im yet to touch, because im not comfortable with changing the chemical composition of my brain based on the opinion of a doctor I dont really know, and who doesnt really know me. but lately i dont even know why im getting out of bed anymore, and the thought that 'death is not the worst thing' is taking over my mind..
I want to get better some other way, but i just dont know how, im so pessimistic about everything.
I am a vegetarian who has a very healthy and balanced diet, so its not that and i train and exercises, in im very good physical shape.
I dont sleep well though, mainly because i dont have anything to get up for, i think.

On antidepressants or off them the decision is not a permanent one, you can always change your mind and try something else if plan A doesn't work out or plan B or C or D.
Now with that said and the fact that you are off them and have been for a few years I'd say try a few things to see if they help before you go back on Lexapro.
First thing I would recommend is get a good vitamin with enough Iron, B-12 and D. A deficiency in any of those can cause depression and anxiety in perfectly healthy individuals. Lack of sleep will do it too.
Next get a volunteer gig. Shelving books at the library, find the hiking trail maintance club, reach out to the local Boyscout troop or your old high school. You need a place where you can go on a regular basis where people are expecting you and glad to see you.
I also recommend attending church at least through the end of January. Singing with other people actually helps A LOT. It is basically controlled breathing with a social aspect. Find a big church where you can sing along or a small church that desperately needs male vocalists. If you go to a big church let them know you are struggling with depression, they probably have a group to help you. And again, remember this isn't permanent. If you go to a big church and you don't like it, you can change your mind in a week and try a different church.
Exercise is very good too. Ironically if you skip over the shit posting Sup Forums is a decent source of ideas.
Get a calendar and once a week on Wednesday rate your mood. Try a few things and if by the end of January nothing seems to be working and that "mood number" hasn't gone up, then go see a doc to try Lexapro again.
Last piece of advice I will throw out there, is melatonin in very small doses helps with sleep. You need like 1/2 a milligram not the 3-5 mg most pills have. If you get too much you go to sleep and then are wide awake in six hours.
Justin Smith
>Exercise daily (I run and lift weights) >Get plenty of sunlight, I live in North Carolina so it's not like there's a lack of it and I spend about 2 hours outside each day >Talk to people almost daily >Sleep ~8 Hours a night >Eat healthily (Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lots of whole grains, I am vegetarian but I tried eating meat for a while and it made no difference)
I'm also prescribed anti depressants and anti psychotics. I go to therapy twice a week. Still fucking hate myself
