The narrative the legacy media and the establishment are hammering is;

They then conflate any media source (say Breitbart) that they doesn't co-operate with their agenda as being "fake news".
They never, ever list outlets like Salon or, as seen by OP, Samantha Bee and Huffington Post, of course. Nor CNN, a major purveyor of Fake News.
Essentially they want to create a blacklist of Fake News outlets so they can filter the narratives. They haven't stopped lying themselves, and they can't, because it's how they create the narrative.
They've started on Breitbart with older, more traditional methods (google and the ad agencies that they were subscribed too are pulling Breitbart for "hate speech").
But eventually the idea is to simply set up filters that delist or block from facebook "fake news".
It's just a really crude way of dominating the media.
Obama and Merkel have been going hard on it - They need to make sure they can get a handle on opposition media prior to the German elections.
It's also partly due to their terror of Steve Bannon.
As Milo said - Bannon's objective is to beat them at their own game - Appeal to emotion rather than dismantling their narrative constructions with factual rebuttals. Offensive rather than defensive. Let them get mired in deconstructing lies.

Both them and CNN and their allies decided that rather than regrouping and doing something like building back up a sense of trustworthiness and respect by becoming objective news sources again (then flipping back to shilling for the next election) that they would just fucking blow it all up and start labeling everything fake news. Destabilise and disrupt everyone.
Perhaps, if they're lucky, find a way to economically or (in the case of Sweden) legally restrict competition.
