Less adverts and pages loaded so much faster because there wasn't enough scripting in a single web page to equal the size of Windows, and there was practically no cross-domain fetching. Kids wouldn't believe how fast a web page used to load.

As far as content goes, everything is better. We may have shit like Facebook, but we also have access to millions of pages on the most obscure topics. Back around 1995 you never visited more than 10 or 15 domains in a single week. Now I cross 20 domains in 5 minutes on google searches.

There was more stuff online, in some ways, back in the day. For instance, until late 2000 or so, Fox News's website had an unlinked page with a raw feed from the AP News wire.

So you'd refresh it and all kinds of stuff would pop up, like the complete Neilsen TV ratings for various countries, or stories marked "NOT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - HOLD UNTIL X."

Things have tightened up significantly since then. Proprietary data isn't as loose and freewheeling as it used to be. There are more paywalls and lock-out systems.
