How can on man be so based?
Christians are based
I've read that he had a show that predicted Stalin's death just before it happened. I've never seen it and my googlefu didn't turn up which episode it was. I'd probably have to go to his museum in Peoria to find that.
>worshipping a jewish messiah
>based
>burning down pagan temples and killing and oppressing native European people who follow native European religions
>based
Christianity is a shitskin religion like Islam. It needs to be destroyed completely. Churches deserve to he burned to the ground and replaced with pagan temples. Crosses need to be broken. Christians need to be deconverted or face death.
Indeed we need more leaders like FUlton Sheen
yep didn't take long . someone didn't watch the video and makes a genetic fallacy
>we were Vikings n shit
Looking forward to Cardinal Dolan turning over the body so Peoria can keep Bishop Sheen on the sainthood track.
Life is Worth Living is the #1 reason to watch/listen to EWTN
Agreed but i have little hope of Dolan doing anything worthwhile
Vikings didn't live in fear of their gods and didn't go about preaching, hoping people would think they were good people.
A FUCKING LEAF

they also converted to Christianity because their religion was weak
>not going to a high latin mass every sunday in your best dress and a fulton j sheen sunday missal in tow
step it up, plebs

And yet, today, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are the only religions that really matter. Those pagan religions didn't stand up to the test of time so well, did they?
Really makes me think.
Pro omnibus et singulis
...
They were outmemed.
All religions are societally beneficial memeplexes. They beat other retarded Milhouse meme religions like "Is Odin a God yet?" because they had better memetic survivability.
interesting theory care to expand upon it?
Funny how all the trolls post once and leave
They also lost.
Because he wasn't just a holy man, he was an intelligent and well educated holy man.
I agree totally i hope we will get more men like him as leaders of the church
It's about time Sup Forums. Meet your true redpill.
yes every video he did id a redpill. It's amazing he was on national TV.
Well, you have to go to the Dawkins understanding of memetics first off. Now what's done here on a daily basis, but consider the function of what a meme is.
A meme is just an idea, a notion, a thought. A single occurrence of such. Memeplexes likewise are interrelated memes that form complex chains of thought and belief.
It should be apparent then that all religions, as well as all political ideologies or philosophies are therefore memeplexes.
But that's all just the definitional stuff. What makes a meme or memeplex survive?
CONTINUED.
>traditionalist
>condemns socialism and communism as anit Christian
>calls out society for trying to be more secular
True Catholics are based.
I still miss Father Corapi
Dawkins thought of memes like we think of genes. I.E. the only genes that help a species survive and/or breed more get passed on to subsequent generations.
Memes are exactly the same, except as ideas, their survival is in the fact that the ideas are continually spread and can stand the test of time over multiple human generations.
A simpler example though was Dawkins' favorite, the chain letter.
The chain letter is perfect because it allows for easy multiplication. Every person that passes on the chain letter is usually compelled to do so to many multiple people. This means the chances of the chain letter being passed on are higher with each person that passes it on since each passer is sending it to 5, 10, 20 people et cetera.
As a result it used to take a lot to kill a chain letter meme, because it was self-propagating through the passers.
This is the concept of meme survivability, or meme fitness.
And how does this tie into religions as a function of what religion's actually are?
CONTINUED
I have a passing familiarity with the concept that you are alluding to, but the memes we see here all the time tend to be ephemeral in nature and by that defenifitio the are =/= to religions. which span thousands of years. The chain letter may have more longevity than most memes but is a spec of sand in comparison to religions.
Well religions are identifiable memeplexes, and they have obvious memetic fitness, because they're passed on through generations of people, and are propagated through prostelyzation and conquest and all of that jazz, but why?
Part of it is in that fitness factor. All successful religions have a mechanism within them to preach the religion or convert others in the cases of Christianity and Islam, or to strongly preserve the religion by protecting a group and encouraging the growth of that in-group like in the case of Judaism.
But there's something more than that. It's that religions also help the people themselves survive.
Look at all the weird rules on shellfish in the old testament. Or that pork is not haram in Islam or kosher in Judaism.
Literally all of that is a guide to telling people what not to eat. Particularly items of food that are prone to kill people when they spoil, which is especially notable since the geographic region those religions stemmed from are hot and thus food would spoil faster.
All of those stupid shellfish suggestions in the old testament are literally passing on a lesson for believers to simply follow without thought that actually increases their real genetic fitness, which in turn increases the memetic fitness of the religious memeplex itself, since believers of the memeplex are more likely to pass it on to their children.
So in that sense religions can literally be physically beneficial.
But there's one more layer too, and it's the most important.
CONTINUED
Religions are apparently the only things that would actually fit his definition which is appropriate because he formulated this theory manly to discredit religions
thank you for a reasonable discussion by the way. i agree many socially beneficial aspect s are transmitted through religion your example of pork is a good one. i would argue though that just because a religion provides pragmatic benefits to it followers does not mean it is not also conveying metaphysical truths.

In the now epic chat between Joe "420" Rogan and Based Leaf Prof Jordan Peterson, Peterson went on for some length about the importance of religion and spirituality.
Because Peterson gets something about religions that a lot of atheists don't - they're the fundamental building blocks for not only survivable societies, but also they serve an important psychic function in an individual's life.
They are very balanced in terms of perspective usually, and they bring balance to a person, an ability to view things from different perspectives. They fill in gaps of knowledge with a surety that would otherwise exist, which relieves a person of anxiety, as Peterson said "God transcends your knowledge."
They can provide a deep and higher purpose.
I'm paraphrasing here, but he went on to the effect of religions speaking of truths beyond literal truths, of teaching people deeper truths about human behavior and the human condition.
And he doesn't seem to believe in religions in a traditional literal sense. He seems to believe in the power and benefit of religions, and has a deep understanding of religious symbolism and how this affects psychology.
So a working solid religion is serving to fulfill at least 3 different very real functions: propagating themselves, protecting the physical well being through sensible laws (which helps to fulfill the first function), and to improve the daily psychic/spiritual life of adherents (which helps to fulfill the 2nd function, and subsequently the first).
So it becomes quite obvious that the only religions that ever truly last are those that prove to be an overall net benefit to societies of humans.
It's easier to see when you compare them to failed memeplexes, like cults and ideologies.
Archbishop Fulton Sheen is easily one of my Top 5 heroes of the 20th century.
If only we had a voice like his today.
Three of my favorite broadcast of his:
youtu.be
He completely annihilates modernism and progressivism/sjw. We need to listen to his words now more than ever.
Pic related sums up the problem of the modern world.
BONUS!!!!
Why cults and ideologies tend to fail compared to religions:
From a very fundamental sense, cults usually fail to uphold the 2nd function of of the successful memeplexes of religions.
Most cults are based around a direct hierarchy that puts the cult leader at the top, and turns the rest of the members into their essentially willing slaves. This invariably means that when the leader fails, usually the cult fails soon after, and in a more general sense, when the the focus is on the leader, it usually leads to the neglect of the members under them which lower their own individual survivability.
That's bad for a memeplex if you want it to succeed (but if the leader does die and the cults adherents keep adhering, you might just have a potentially viable religion there, buddy).
Ideologies are trickier, because they require religious or societal structures to work within/against.
If it weren't for Western Society which is heavily based around Christianity, Communism and Marxism would literally not exist, as they are ideologies built to destroy those structures.
Similarly, Nazism wouldn't exist without Communism, since it (and most fascism) are ideologies that developed to counteract Communism in my view.
I'm of the belief that ideologies are all inherently destructive of something else, because almost all of them are reactionary, and can't survive on their own.
Worse, most ideologies seem to be very bad at actually providing deeper truths or relieving spiritual/psychic anxiety. If anything, they seem to increase anxiety as a way to get their adherents to act, due to their reactionary nature.
So ideologies are actually quite bad in the long run.
They probably fulfill the first two designations for memetic fitness, but are bad at the third.
This makes them inferior to religions or larger cultural mores, which is in turn why they usually seek to destroy these things.
Ideologies are in effect: cancer. Religions are where it's at.
Oh I agree, see --
6/10 bait.
Thank you for your interesting points of view friend.
seeing your followup made that clear.
I am still not sure i can agree fully with your premise and unfortunately the nature of our board does not allow me time time to reflect on it as much as id like and respond in a way i would be proud of.Hope fully i will discuss theology and philosophy again with you. In the meantime please watch more of bishop Sheen's work he truly is a giant of the last century and even if you aren't catholic or even religious, you will learn much from him
Because God gifted him with a tongue of fire and a mind of wisdom that carved through the heresies of the day and even of the future and revealed Holy Truth.
Oh Venerable Fulton Sheen, Ora Pro Nobis
Yes we are even more beset with the heresies of modernism today. He was truly a prophet
I would love to stay with you friends in my thread, but unfortunately my wife is waiting for me.
deus vult Brothers
The Church is not merely armed against the heresies of the past or even of the present, but equally against those of the future, that may be the exact opposite of those of the present. Catholicism is not ritualism; it may in the future be fighting some sort of superstitious and idolatrous exaggeration of ritual. Catholicism is not asceticism; it has again and again in the past repressed fanatical and cruel exaggerations of asceticism. Catholicism is not mere mysticism; it is even now defending human reason against the mere mysticism of the Pragmatists. Thus, when the world went Puritan in the seventeenth century, the Church was charged with pushing charity to the point of sophistry, with making everything easy with the laxity of the confessional. Now that the world is not going Puritan but Pagan, it is the Church that is everywhere protesting against a Pagan laxity in dress or manners. It is doing what the Puritans wanted done when it is really wanted. In all probability, all that is best in Protestantism will only survive in Catholicism; and in that sense all Catholics will still be Puritans when all Puritans are Pagans.
Glory to God in the Highest and Grace to His Holy Church, the Vanguard against all Heresies of this world that leads us astray.
