Quality of life wasn't that much better. I'm a gen xer, what I recall about culture then was the dominance of big industries pushing cultural preferences. In music, new wave was once cutting edge and then in the blink of an eye everything was new wave. Metal was small club angst that eventually filled arenas. Big money was pushing music, pushing TV, Hollywood, pushing everything.
IMO culture has far more niche options now, thanks to the internet. The fact that forums like Sup Forums can exist is great. I have a feeling though that there may be a new wave of corporate consolidation (like what's happening to newspapers and TV stations right now). Soon it will all be one voice as big money grabs the largest possible audience.
The subtle duration of punk in the 70s and 80s fought against this before it too sold out. I'm wondering what the next rebellion will look like. Will modern society have to first become the odd heterogeneous mix it was in the 80s before other threads unravel?
