In the western world tipping is only considered custom by the US. The rest of the west only really considers it as something (big) groups do to ease on the payment details a bit (why split 246.58 over 13 people when you could just as easily 260). That, or for extraordinary service. Not ordinary.

Bullshit. In Russia you tip pizza delivery boy, you tip the guy who refuels your car at the gas station, you tip at the diner with waitresses. You can tip the tip jar in most bars, even shitholes. It's just an extra "thank you" for good service. Your pizza got delivered hot - thank the delivery boy. The bartender made small talk while pouring your beer - throw some change in the tip jar. They are not obliged to smile for you, they are not obliged to be nice. But they make your time enjoyable so you tip, it's common sense.
