Eventually your society will grow to the point where, in order to thrive, the society needs to efficiently allocate resources. This point is where communism will fail.

Its a meme, Marxism proved it's self wrong. No amount of wishful thinking or technology can make a seriously flawed ideology work. Too many times it's failed and yet fools think they can repeat the expirament again and expect different results.
Who will build the automation? Who will repair the automation? Who will work to make new forms of automation to meet new needs, as they come up? A group of central planners cannot know the future and cannot possibly account for every problem. Free markets arent perfect but they certainly do a better job at tackling needs than a bunch of short-sighted bureaucrats.
In a post scarcity economy its a possibility but even then its doubtful that it won't be exploited to control the population by turning them into welfare slaves dependent on the government for everything.

I'm exhausted of everyone calling on automation without being in the industrial controls and automation field at all.
The reason why automated labor is so cheap is because the cost of electric power is too low given the damage it does to the earth and the cleanup required for a nuclear site. Russia and china are being absolutely strangled to death by carcinogens of all sorts but you don't know that because they block the real happenings.
We need human labor because they run off jelly doughnuts and not radioactive strontium90 and cesium137, fossil fuels, etc.
Further, it's hareder to get good engineers when there's so little reward for doing well(in a communist setting). Hell, I can't get the engineers to make good decisions *now*. And on the other side, good technicians are already in short supply in a way that will not be fixed by "training". Excellent technicians have natural talents in patience, mindfulness and divergent non-linear thinking.
Tl;dr: You need a zero-toxic energy source and a *way smarter* (not dumber) workforce to be able to even begin drafting your robot-slavery wet-dream.

In the USSR and Eastern European socialist countries, it wasn't possible to be a NEET. There wasn't welfare like in the West, instead you were assigned a job if you couldn't find one yourself.
