Couple years, coding jobs pay relatively well for a first post-grad gig. I started with just 4 friends and jobs that paid around $20,000-$30,000 and were finished in a week.
(we didn't know how low we were undercutting the competition, as well as that $20,000 jobs were piddly shit)
We were each solid in every language a bit but were each an expert in a particular field: iOS, Android, HTML5, and C++/C# (me).
We saved up, started producing our own products and started going for jobs with a lot of VC interest.
We're east-coast based right now and Bloomberg is supposedly going to try to move the Cornell Tech Institute to Roosevelt Island to make a sort of Silicon Island in NYC. We're gonna try to base ourselves out of there when it goes up.
We've expanded and are producing more of our own products now. We keep a basic flow of revenue by jumping on meme projects and bidding them off as quickly as we can before the meme dies (we made an Election 2016 game, a Harambe game, a Netflix and Chill app, etc). I'm trying to get into green-tech appliances since I imagine tons of rich New Yorkers and Los Angelans will want to move more into that shtick with Trump at the helm. Incidentally, selling to them will do the most good since those cities use the most coal-electricity per capita.

I'm half joking with you, although you might want to look at the tax rate and wealth inequality that "success stories" like Sweden and Germany have. I actually live in a country with socialized healthcare that I appreciate, even though waiting times are obscene, staff are overworked and surgery is better done at private institutions. You also have to watch that the government doesn't try to move and reduce vital services to smaller population cities/towns in their efforts to cut costs. A few years ago they wanted to cut one of the Neurosurgery departments in the South Island their reasoning being one department in our third most populated city would be sufficient. That city was a 7 hour drive away from my city, the other city was 2 and a half.

We take jobs as they come to stay afloat, we're still basically free lancers living paycheck to paycheck (on the company wide level). Apps and coding is where the easy money is right now, getting into more heavy industries requires capital. Either I work at a legacy company for a couple years, get to some high level and save up enough capital to start up, I save up capital now from low level contracts or I go to a VC. The VC option means I'll have to answer to them for business directions that may not be the most profitable but I would prefer to go in still. It's also incredibly difficult to get VC money if you've never worked or managed a project before.
