Basically, Russian leaders have always been completely paranoid, and rightly so. They've been at war too many times (and escaped by pure luck several of those times) not to be paranoid. They are pretty much encircled by rivals, and despite Russia's size, they have a lot of strategic weaknesses (poor access to warm water ports, poor access to the sea in general, unpredictable agriculture, lots of places to invade from, main population hub is dangerously close to historical enemies, etc).
Russia is like a cornered bear. The only way to get Russia to calm down is to actually leave them alone.
