I remember in the early 2000s even before myspace finding out about Swedish chip music scenes and festivals. Some of them posted pics of the events and this lead me deeper down the rabbit hole where I saw other gatherings, personal webpages where people posted pics like they would facebook, etc.
Before this you would have to watch travel documentaries, maybe know someone from there, or travel there. It was incredible to my American eyes. Every street, storefront, home, was pristine. People looked elegantly fashionable similar to the Japanese. It seemed like a large extended family of a society.. Poverty seemed to be in Ikea looking apartment blooks that, evne they, were pristine and orderly.
