On one hand, the media is discussing support for the rebels, who I'm fairly certain are Al Qaeda terrorist forces and islamic militants who want to install a caliphate in Syria; on the other hand, the autists over at Syria General show a 100% undying support for Assad.
I'm guessing the truth lies somewhere in the middle of this mess, but I'd appreciate a brief explanation of the matter's history.
Dominic Jenkins
You are half right. Many rebels are alqaeda the terrorists, but like many are sunnis and even shiites who are tired of the fact that the only people in charge are the Alawites.

Be Syria and Assad Have oil Refuse to deal with sneaky Jew fucks Ally with Russia instead for protection Build oil pipeline back to Russia, pump oil away from Israel > This will not stand Israel induces unrest in Syria, Assad puts down West starts training and arming rebels Assad puts down ISIS created, West demonises ISIS as pure evil but doesn't actually stop it West universally agrees that both Assad and ISIS are sub-human and can be crushed without moral complaints > ISIS will overthrow Assad, then we intervene and claim oil
Instead, Russia intervenes and BTFOs ISIS West is now stuck in the situation where ISIS cannot win, and Assad stays in power > Muh militia, muh civilian massacres
Assad & Russia demonised instead
Basically we are stealing their shit and trying to look like the goodies. Instead Russia has fucked it up and now it's WW3 or no oil.

it started in tunisia with the Arab spring. you have to go back to that. revolutions were supposed to sweep the arab world cleanly, our state department was heavily involved. You can beleive what you want whether it be about Quatar and the oil pipeline, or civilzational Jihad, but one thing remains true, is that the ppwers that be assumed Assad would topple, leave or bend the knee - and he has not, nor will he, and he will die a free man in Syria. Damascus is a strong hold of both christian and muslims alawites, Assad is protecting his people against foreign hordes that were spurred on by radicalism, funded by the west.
The FSA is a puppet of the state department, and ISIS is a puppet of the CIA. the fighters attempting to topple Syria are from all over the world. barely any are Syrian.
even if you think everything I just wrote is bullshit, you still have to go all the way back to the start of the Arab Spring.

My government and yours are sending boatloads of money in foreign aid to "freedom fighters" in the Middle East.

I agree with the ISIS stuff, but do you have evidence that the US, West, or Israel created unrest in Syria? I remember seeing a document or two from the US gov't stating that Al Qaeda was their ally in the Middle East, but I'd appreciate it if your proof was posted here in this thread again.
James Martin
same goes
Robert Brooks
The details are irrelevant, as is who is "right" or "wrong", you shouldn't support either because no matter who you support; you lose. All that matters is the conflict in the middle east for the past 15 years has been orchestrated and funded by extremely powerful and wealthy (((individuals))) with an agenda to flood western Europe with immigrants and it just so happens that the plan came to fruition during the Syrian conflict.
Samuel Nguyen
Wasn't there this thing recently where Israel said it's gonna start OPENLY funding ISIS because they oppose Assad?
Also, looking at the statements the government and media have made, it's clear the USA also supports the "rebels", while conveniently failing to mention that those rebels are ISIS.
Also, the leaks stating plans for destabilizing Syria as far back as 2006, as mentioned in
Kevin Wilson
>the details aren't important The details are the only important things.

Egyptian here, lived through all of this shit, saw it first hand. Can provide info about background involving the US government, Saudi intentions, etc. more if need be. Everyone in the West has got it catastrophically wrong and nobody likes listening for some reason.
but, basic jist of the war itself
>arab spring starts >countries erupt in protest against dictatorial regimes >revolutions succeed in different countries >Syrians start demonstrating >Crackdown on protests is disproportionately violent in Syria >Thugs and plain clothes officers start beating people, arrests, torture and murder are rampant >after a year of protests protesters begin to arm themselves to defend themselves >more and more crackdowns, but now with resistance >sides begin to take shape >FSA starts becoming a thing >FSA an umbrella group with the most presence at the time, benefiting from defecting leadership, etc. etc. >lots of people from different orientations join the FSA >Al-Assad sends in the military >mutinies everywhere in the army >now becomes a full-fledged conflict >conflict begins >conflict really tears country apart >back and forth between Assad and the FSA >FSA becomes really big, fault lines begin to develop, various sub-groups too >US supports FSA >Gulfies support FSA >everybody loves the FSA >Egypt supports the FSA (~2012-2013) >Assad appeals to Iran and Hezbollah for help >both give it to him because he's Shiite as well ^this is very important ^^ this is very important ^^^ this is very important >Egypt has Morsi overthrown, elects El-Sisi >El-Sisi much less vitriolic >Conflict evens out more or less >new factions emerge in the FSA >ISIS among them >start butchering FSA >start gaining territory fast >rebels split into various different groups now, FSA no longer an effective umbrella >FSA now a group like any other, but with a lot of it's previous groups (ie. previously under it's umbrella) friendly to eachother >Everyone's fighting everyone cont.
Levi Robinson
I have that infographic, but it doesn't include any citations or links to the kinds of leaked documents I'm used to seeing come from Wikileaks. I know there were certain cables but I never read them thoroughly or saved them, since I had no need.

Until you spend a few hours researching the Syrian civil war yourself, ignore everything you hear. All of it is propaganda.
Always assume it's propaganda until you find proofs.

I'm saying especially with Syria. I come out of a /sg/ thread knowing less than I went in with (fucking white helmets). All I can say is that it's propaganda wars (or infowars). Though "Assad good, rebels bad" is a pretty good start.
Jason Foster
>Assad still not making enough significant gains >Russia intervenes, starts helping Assad out after American non-direct-involvement >Russia helps Assad make gains accross "functional Syria" {blue} >Assad tries to maintain control of that >gets increasingly more control of it >rebels fighting back >slow Assad gains >pick up more and more as time progresses because opposition is in trouble
and this is where it gets really dangerous, this current stage of the war
>borders are being redrawn across sectarian lines instead of national lines >people still support Al-Assad >people still support rebels >the country is being fucked and it's borders are being redrawn and everyone is oblivious to the ramifications that will have on them >everyone is clapping and cheering for their side >things might get a whole lot worse if Al-Assad gains functional Syria then ends the war
actually, either Bashar or Hafez tried to assassinate Saudi leadership at some point, they have a grudge. Also, would it be too much to ask for people to stop adopting a simplistic view towards things? It's complicated af and if people don't want to understand why things might be even messier but comment on small minutiae instead you're ultimately screwing yourself over. I made a huge post about why shit's sketchy in /sg/ but everybody want's to support their side and not try and understand how they're screwing themselves over in the process.
Hudson Wright
No, it's not.
"The SAR good, everybody else bad" is a good start.
Fuck Al-Assad, fuck the FSA, fuck religious-based fault-lines, fuck people with a lack of foresight and a boner for wars, fuck supremacy complexes wherever they lie when it comes to the war, fuck Islamists of both sects.

>US, West, or Israel created unrest in Syria? Man, I like scepticism. But congress just passed the bill to supply syrian "opposition" with MANPADS. MANPADS. Does that sound like popular revolt to you? They literally trained them to fight. And these are the same mercs that would jump in bed with isis if their western overlords stop payig them.
Do you really think civilians in aleppo prefer being bombarded for ~4 years to a totalitarian regime? Of course not, but they are meat shields and the "opposition" wouldn't let go of their meat shields.
Luke Martin
Both sides aren't great, in a perfect world it'd be a completely different regime entirely BUT we know what we're getting with Assad... stability.
A similar thing could be said about Ghaddafi and Sadam Hussein
Matthew Fisher
the problem is you tie Assad with the state. Assad is not Louis XIV.
Gavin Hernandez
Assad with help from Russia and Iran vs Isis, the rebels, and dozens of smaller terrorist groups The rebels as they were at the start are long gone, they are Isis in disguise , and it's obvious as shit Isis has guys in the rebel leadership. With the fall of Aleppo, the rebels are fucked, it will be awhile till they are defeated proper, but winning is no longer in their cards. Now it will be more Assad vs Isis proper . King nigger has been dicking around giving rebels supplies and contractor support but is too pussy to do more then drone bomb assad forces.
