the difference between russia and the US is very simple to underline in the confines of a model layed out in the book "why nations fail".
the given model specifies institutions that it calls inclusive(i.e. the population participates in the given institutions), and extractive(the powers that be extract finances from the local populace via curroption monoploization, regulation and other means that ensure the enrichment of a given company owned by a given elite).
the US has the former institutions while russia has the latter.
and I will grant you that it is not black and white in that all of the USes institutions are inclusive and all of russia's institutions are extractive, but what is more important is their foriegn policy: the US seeks to(however ineptly) spread inclusive institutions(i.e neocons), while russia seeks to spread extractive ones.
this is the difference that matters, and given that inclusive institutions are better than extractive ones, I will support the US in their endeavors.
The US population has absolutely no say in whether the US will go to war or not and whether it will go through with certain geopolitical decisions such as trade deals or interventions or not.
Unless we're actually assuming a super-idealistic model where people not wanting something makes the US government stop.
Similarily, US foreign ops are only to maintain or spread their influence, or influence of their proxies.
That they are in any way more inclusive after they take over a country is at best laughable.

I'm just an English teacher, but on Japanese tv last night I saw a news talk show talking about a Putin/Abe oil pipeline through Siberia, Sakhalin, down through Hokkaido and to the rest of Japan. It seemed interesting to me like the media is trying to warm the populace to a certain kind of bilateral alliance.
Meanwhile, China, because of their rapid growth, has become too greedy and bites the hand that feeds. Korea is similar and will just switch to whichever side, US or China, gives them the best deal. I could kind of see the workings of Chinese and Koreans planning a sort of CJK alliance, but now with Trump elected they will try to change their tune.
