They could of used any other symbol, even a made up one, but + mess with peoples head.

That seems like an incredibly stupid way to teach patterns or whatever you call this in english.

Especially because this is a very easy one, so I'm guessing it's something like 2nd-4th grade material, students who may still have troubles with addition.

Just make it a normal ass
1, 5, 12 , 2, 10, 24, 3, 15, 36, 5, 25, ??
series. You don't have to do that confusing ass format with addition that isn't actually addition.

Well yeah it's obvious but I'm saying this could easily cause problems for people who don't have a very firm grasp on addition yet, which is probably who that thing is directed to as it's so easy.

It may sound like nitpicking but 1+5=12 just isn't correct and teaching kids to work with that assumption is stupid. You may not think it a big problem, but you've got a few years of experience in on those kids.

Fair point, but a series of 1, 5 ,12 etc may not teach them what 7,17 is (or 7 "+" 17).

The resultant numbers are going up by multiples of 6 based on the sequence (6, 12, 18, 24). Or it is a simple 2x the added numbers = result.

I'm leaning towards 54.
