Again, the reason they included us in the first place - agriculture. But that isn't even the main case for going after tighter ties with Ukraine, it's literally an attempt to suppress potential Russian expansion. Russia can be friendly with the USA and its president may sometimes announce that all they want between the two nations is a friendship. But they have never announced such a thing to the EU nor have they been friendly. Ever. They always hold us as a potential future rival and even if they don't want to expand aggressively into us, their defense strategy and anxiety dictates them to secure their borders before Europe becomes a military power again.
That has always been the strategy of that region, even pre-WW2. They annexed a buffer territory and defensively amassed their army on the border to be prepared in case Germany attacks them, but by doing that they didn't realize that they actually seemed quite aggressive from a German POV and forced them to invade them as Germany was thinking that the Russians are about to install communism in them. This is always the case in rivalries and the exact same thing will repeat again. Both sides think they're doing the right thing and push eachother into a war.
Russia is best to be left defenseless for its own good, and pretty much everyone else in Europe.
