Spencer and his organization helped to coin the term "Alt-Right" awhile ago, but it didn't really stick until Trump's campaign and when Milo started using it. Before it was fully associated with white nationalism, he would joke about being the "Queen of the Alt Right" and would defend them by saying "Supposedly a group of racist, homophobic, anti-semetic skinheads want a Jewish, gay man who fucks black dudes on a regular basis as their spokesman." He would say that to, on one hand, affirm he does not consider himself fully an alt right member, and to allow the Alt-Right a possible chance to spread into the mainstream.

Have a pretty good gaydar and I don't sense that anything is wrong. There is really nothing that indicates that he's a faggot. Think that the faggot meme is just a shill meme.

I don't really get how you guys can be suckered into following Spencer or Milo. They obviously just want to be media personalities and they've got 0 intellectual clout.

He's one of the few who put his face out there, and the media like that, it's good for exposure.
There aren't many others, I can think of Heimbach, but people say he says weird stuff sometimes, and he also countersignals people. He's also not the most "socially valuable" guy around.

There are other people who might be better for Spencer's role, but they don't want it, eithet because of the risks, or it just isn't their thing.
Off the top of my head, I can think of The Daily Shoah guys, Andrew Anglin and Jazzhands McFeels, they are all great communicators, but they don't put themselves out there like Spencer does.
