Not that I particularly like buddhists but in a lot of buddhist countries young males tend to live as monks for a couple of years. It's not neccessarily a thing of devoting your whole life just a thing that most males do because they feel like it's worth doing.

Can't speak for Buddhist monks but for Catholics even the most cloistered, solitary monks (Carthusians) produce products for society. And this goes for all orders whether it be Trappists products and honest business practices, Benedictine schools, Franciscan (not monks but many catagorize Monks/Friars together) community programs, etc.

These are just practical contributions so art, music, etc. is an entirely different "product" they produce as well.

And this is just what they cintribute if you arent a Christian yourself. Obviously Christians consider their prayer life a massive contribution to the world as well but you don't ha e to believe that to realize they produce practical, tangible things.

There used to be warrior monks who provided protection for all the neighborhoods that surrounded the monastry. They were decent in terms of medicine and they gave you a humble eduction if you applied yourself. Also it's kinda cool to think there's a monk somewhere on a mountain top figuring it all out, then coming back down again smiling. So you know it's not that bad.

They generally work as moral teachers and are largely self-sufficient.
