Well, because the "fundamentals of funerals" is still there, they usually happen because you're either celebrating the persons life or mourning their death; both atheists and religious people use the same hardware, we are all human and we all have feelings for others, except sociopaths and so on, you get my idea.
I celebrate a person's life during funurels because there is no more after death, what you do and how you do it is up to you brother.

Religion is something that has god(s), with stories, sagas, words of wisdom and guidance, it's spiritual.

In answer to your question OP, funerals can be a religious or a cultural thing, it's a means of getting rid of a body so no one else has to smell it.

I did not see any atheist that wanted a funeral. Most of the times, it's their families that hold them well... kind of against their love one death because sometimes it happend for a family to be religious and the guy who died to be atheist but they still want to save him .
I saw a lot of suicide people who didn't belived in God having a special funeral because of the insistence of their family to try to save his soul.

I am an atheist and if I die, I don't want a funeral . Just burn my body and maybe hold a dinner with friends to talk about how reckless morron I was during my lifetime. ;))
