Human sacrifice was common in the ancient Levant, burning the offering was also common and seen as the method of transferring the sacrifice to the god, this practice wasn't particular to Moloch. The Ancient greeks would also use fire to transfer animal sacrifices to their respective gods, they called this holókaustos (to burn entirely).
Perhaps if a sacrifice is great, one might be rewarded greatly, like say with a 'promised land'.
