No photographers were harmed, they had the most incredibly steady shot when having a gun aimed at them by an unknown assassin.
The Russian ambassador seemed to have given up and showed absolutely no resistance or screaming from the attack, almost as if he knew it was doomed to happen. He plops down on the floor and dies in perfect stance that is characteristically that of a dead person.
Comes less than a week after Obama says Russia will face action for their "hacks".

The photographer passed it on his way home and figured he'd be there to get some pictures. In his interview he said pictures of the exhibit might be useful for articles about the relations between Russia and Turkey.
And I think it was pretty obvious that the guy only wanted to kill the ambassador. Not that I wouldn't be shitting my pants still but the photographer witnessed a once in a lifetime event and took his chances to, I would imagine, elevate his career. He's probably going to win a Pulitzer for one of the photos he took.
Real life and humans aren't predictable. Just because you (and probably I) would be a pussy and run away doesn't mean everyone would. Especially if staying and taking a few photos could basically make you famous and well respected in your field.
