ISIL in Syria use blitzkrieg tactics akin to what the Germans did in Operation Barbarossa - let enemy forces spread thin, then attack fast and encircle so they don't retreat to a reinforced point.
They've been also raiding supply convoys in Kirkuk and Salahuddin during the Mosul Offensive.
ISIL structure is decentralized so their operations both don't interfere with different fronts and so they do not get assassinated easily.
