I have a guy like that who works in my department at work. 30 years old, covered in tattoos and colored hair. Vegan, constantly smells like onions, and I'm not exaggerating. He's been working the same job for 12 years since he was old enough to work, and hasn't moved an inch since and lives with some shitty roommate in a house that doesn't even have air conditioning. I sometimes feel bad for him because he's genuinely a good person and I like hanging out with him, but he's always talking to awful tumblrite whores who cheat on him and use him and he's always dumping his entire paycheck on even more shitty tattoos and shopping sprees at Whole Foods. He's been wanting to move to Portland for a while but he is never able to because he has no money and no idea what he's going to do there to afford the cost of living, other than couch surfing. I really wish him the best but I have moved up from where I started, in the same position he is now, and I get paid more than he does now and I'm already speaking to our managers about me moving up to another line of work within our company that pays more, and in 5 years when I move on he'll probably still be there, wishing he could go to Portland but never doing anything about getting there.

Late as fuck but I'll throw my reply at you. I honestly doubt success would change him at all. He's already the highest possible position they can give him within that department. I didn't stick around for it when I worked with him because me moving 20 feet over already has me making more than he does. He is the team leader for where he works and coordinates a bunch of supply chain. He says he supposedly has contacts in Portland that can get him a decent job making somewhere around what he makes now, I don't know why he doesn't pounce on it. He's just depressed a lot which again makes me feel bad because he's a good guy at heart but there's nothing I can do if he is unwilling to help himself. He does, at the very least, still keep in touch with his parents and he's giving his old man some tools he wanted and something for his mom, can't remember what but I remember it was nice. He talks a lot of shit about his parents being "Ugh, conservatives" and not understanding but at least he respects them enough as his parents. He was a Bernout who immediately shifted to Clinton, for what that's worth.
