It's important to understand that social libertarianism already failed. Its big modern emergence was in the 1960's. It led to libertinism, self-destruction, crime, a giant drug problem, etc. And it ruined the lives of people incapable of handling liberty, which turns out to be a significant portion of the populace.
So, we're probably swinging back toward social paternalism.
