Nation states as they stand now. are a joke. Being in Canada you feel this probably more than others. But, they served a common regional purpose once.
That said, humanity's future lies in even more regionalized forms of government (dismantling of current countries and states) if we're to ever overcome the corruption and greed that we're face with.

Liberalism was good for the world, except for the last stage where individual became "the smallest unit of society" instead of nuclear family. Individuals are not a smallest microcosm of society, family is. This is why when women got the vote, what in effect happened is instead of each family having one vote to represent it's interest, they were divided along political lines. Which led to sexual liberation, dissolution of family and death of civilization. You could argue that women were given vote because society became too prosperous, but that's another topic.
You could say the same thing about most countries. At one point even poland was the biggest melting pot in europe.
