Despite being a much better politician than damn near anyone in the last 25 years, she's not good at the "image" aspect, so while she's always had good approval ratings once she's in, she has a hard time getting in the door. That allowed the race to get close enough that the media's over-coverage of the email and/or foundation non-stories actually made a difference.

The analogy I give is that it's like when a shitty NFL team beats a good once on a 55 yard field goal in overtime. You can say it was "lucky," and maybe it was, but the good team should never have allowed it to get that close to begin with.

That's an essential part of being "a good politician" though. She's had a lifetime of experience in politics but she lost in 2008 to a largely unknown one term senator and in 2016 to literally Donald Trump.

If she's as truly hated as Trump voters make her out to be, she never would have been elected or appointed to any office to begin with, and yeah, I know Trump voters think differently, but she always thrived in whatever governmental position she had once she was there. He approval ratings were always a lot higher at the ends of her terms than on the way in, and the people she worked with said she did well.

But all I'm trying to say as that when it comes to working the Washington system, all the give-and-take, wheeling and dealing, she's very, very good at that and respected among her peers for it. Image helps a lot during elections, but performance matters more once you're in, and she always got that part right.

Using Bill as an example (your pic), he cheated on his wife, while president, got caught, had his dirty laundry aired out in front of the nation (not great for the image), but his performance as president is what drove his approval ratings and his legacy. Bill could be a fuckup as a person, but the economy was booming and unemployment was at like, 3.8%, so he was a-okay.
