I traveled through the u s of a yesteryear and I must say the difference in hospitality is enormous. The north is like northeren europe: cold, silent and introvert people, but added with a touch of extra smugness.
While people in the south were as southeren europeans: welcoming, friendly, helping, not too "civilized" but great people. I feared they would hate my french accent but they were not at all hostile, never really.

I had the opposite experience. The people in the big cities were cold and unapproachable as urban people usually are, but the people in the rural states I've met were some of the angriest and most hostile individuals I've ever seen.
