Issue is that poverty level is much higher in terms of quality of life in modern times. At least in more technological countries.
There's a much bigger economy, so the wealthy have more, but so do the poor. Air conditioning, refrigeration, non-leaking roofs, free internet, better medicine, etc.
Income gap only becomes a real problem when quality of life suffers. If quality of life for low income improves steadily, there is much less issue.
