What really pissed me off was an interview with the director where he basically admitted the movie got automatically green-lit for it's SJW content. Some good picture had to rot in obscurity while this guy gets the dough for pushing all the right buttons in the PC addled pea-brain of a Hollywood exec.

Not sure about how the movie treats the factual history of the matter, but I suspect it's terribly biased in favor of a social justice narrative, as Hollywood is well known for.

The movie is exploiting the way "human computer" sounds to modern ears. Remember during the 50s that engineers didn't have the benefit of actual personal computers or even electronic calculators. And it would be a waste of their talents to spend all their time doing trivial arithmetic by hand. Hence unskilled human "computers" were hired to do the trivial arithmetic for them. The "accomplishment" of these women is they did elementary school mathematics so the engineers who got us to the moon didn't have to.

The white male engineers did all the creative work, and passed off any tedious mathematical calculations to the sheboons. The sheboons literally just followed a set of algorithms.

Then for the next 15 years she made "fundimental contributions" to the space program and published 26 scientific papers. If you were able to find out that early in her career she was just a mere number cruncher, did you just skip over the part where she went on to become an influencial mathematician? It won't. It's probably not an expensive movie so by the definition of 'flop' it doesn't need a lot of success at the box office.

It'll get enough, people in places like here will bitch, and this will get picked up on in the media who will defend the movie, making it more popular and as far as the brain dead American population is concerned history will record that these three black women single-handedly planned, designed, built, tested, and flew in the Apollo rockets, despite legions of opposition every step of the way from dumb racist white men who had nothing to do with its success.

It's just that there were so so many great engineers and scientists responsible for the Apollo missions. Did these women contribute to its success? Sure, but the others get no great Hollywood movie treatment. They'll never get to be and never got to be household names like Katherine Johnson even if they were far more critical to its success. Some of those men will undoubtedly be in this movie and how the people view them will be completely determined by whether Katherine Johnson remembers them as a supporter or opponent of her, not by what they actually contributed to Apollo.

For all the specific shit that she did, read the wikipedia article, but for example: "In 1970, Johnson worked on Apollo 13's mission to the Moon. Once the mission was aborted, Johnson's work on backup procedures and charts helped safely return the crew to Earth four days later."

Even today if you look up NASA aerospace technologist jobs you'll see the only requirement is getting a bachelor's degree with a minimum 2.9 GPA or having one year of comparable experience. The only significant shift in her work was switching from performing trivial arithmetic so engineers wouldn't have to checking the trivial arithmetic performed by new mechanical computer systems so engineers wouldn't have to back when there was less confidence in the reliability of the new technology.
