In NZ the "upper class" are pathetically groveling and servile to foreigners with real money, especially if they are European. They all talk like a parody of the BBC and get scammed by contractors who promise to install "European" bathrooms/kitchens in their prefab "penthouses" but actually just install poor-quality Chinese knockoffs.

In NZ it is considered high-class to have Ikea furniture simply because Ikea is from Europe. Of course, none of us have ever seen Ikea furniture, just the Chinese knock-offs. A few ways to get rich here:

Old/communist money is the most common.

90% of the rich people here, have build up their wealth during the 50 years of communism.
Surprisingly enough, most of these people have been smart enough to hire economic advisors and haven't wasted the wealth they stole.
That being said however, they can only remain rich if they stay here, because of the dirty deals and favors they do with/for the government.
This includes mostly politicians, journalists, lawyers, company/franchise owners, hoteliers etc.

The second most common way is through drug/human/weapon traffic:
In exchange for political and police protection, these people fuel their entire bussinesses with money from drug, human and weapon traffic.
The people from this type are mostly, but not limited to: sport club owners, hoteliers, construction firm owners, high ranking police and justice officials, journalists and "celebrities".

Third way is through shortlived "fame" and prostitution.

A lot of women have gained a decent amount of money through their "musical" talent and being high end escorts for wealthy people around the country and throughout the world.

Every single model or singer is available for purchase for the right prize, but some to the right people only.

Male singers/actors usually see a few years of spotlight before they hit rock bottom in debts and with drug or alcohol addictions.

The fourth way I can think of is actually the only right way to get rich and that is through innovation, hard work and dedication.

There are literally less than 10 people, who've made sizeable fortunes this way.

Needless to say every single one of them has left the country a long time ago and wants nothing to do with the shitty/corrupt/degenerate life that goes on here.

These people are all well educated and well mannered and a real pleasure to talk with or learn from. I've had the benefit of meeting one such person during my first job. I've also met a lot of the people from the above mentioned groups and the difference is like night and day.

If the poor knew how the rich lived in this country, how every single thing about their lives is just BETTER, how every mistake they make has ten safety nets, how they have so much room to breathe and make wise decisions in life because they aren't struggling to survive or giving up their dreams to help sick family members, there would be a revolution in twenty minutes.

If you live around them for a little while you'll start to see how it seeps into everything. Every decision they make is more carefree. They feel subtly entitled to comforts you don't even know exist. It goes on and on, it's every aspect of their lives.

I don't even mind the ultra-rich that much because at least they're aware of it. It's the upper middle class that really fucking sucks.

When shit breaks, like their phone or computer or even small things, they can fix it or get a new one instantly. They don't live in fear of getting a costly illness. If a pet needs a $7300 surgery, they don't have to feel horrific guilt over the decision to either ruin the family financially or kill their pet. Banks will assign special attendants to children of rich parents so they are always pampered. They go on frequent enough vacations that they are noticeably more relaxed, worldly, their "year" is more broken up into enjoyable things, with heights of "getting away" from work. If they fuck up in college, that's fine, your dad has the bill. If they need a year or two to "find themselves," usually by travelling and spending tons of money that isn't theirs, dad has the bill.

Out of university and want to take time off? No problem. Want to go back to school? No problem. Your family is always there as a safety net. There's no responsibility, no pressure to provide for them because they're getting older, no pressure to sacrifice your own comfort. You can take five extra years in your twenties to make comfortable, wise decisions, fully relaxed.

Don't get me started on grooming for success. Private schools, smart parents with top-tier connections who make DAMN sure you ace the SATs and do good internships and know how to write amazing letters to colleges. Parents who aren't so busy with work that they can't teach you good manners or make sure you don't fuck up your life. But at the same time, you're rich, so you can still enjoy parties and youth because your social group isn't scum.
