Not really, up north there are bears, deer and there used to be aurochs at one point. Animals are arguably even more plentiful, just different. Monks also often really didn't care. Just check out those bees.

I think he was right but people tried to attack him due to the implications (ex: the telescope) of him being right. Probably something else the book disproves.
