Communism is the next stage of humanity following the capitalist stage.
What exactly is communism according to Marxist-Leninists:

1) Socialism - there are a lot of different flavors of this "ideology" however the basic are roughly the same. "No property, No money, No problem!". At it's core is the philosophy known as "Utopian Socialism" which believes that if everyone could just take what they wanted materialism and greed would vanish, furthermore the belief that people would "work" voluntarily to supply the needs for the society either out of civic pride or just good will to their fellow man.
Utopian socialism HAS been tried before, and it has failed every time it was tried. It barely can function in a small community, it gets more and more unwieldy the more people involved. The basic problem with Utopian socialism is the same problem that plagues all of socialism's failures, Humans are greedy, selfish and generally speaking rather lazy if they don't need to work or pay to get stuff. Even the people who work, if they don't receive anything for it become demotivated quickly.
---- interlude: these problems were uncovered rather early on by the early socialists, and socialists in general started forming all sorts of different theories on how to make socialism work hence all the different flavors which spawned from "Utopian socialism". Communism was one of these flavors.
COMMUNISM: Communism was the brain child of Marx and Engles, they approached the 'socialism' problem from a different angle; something they liked to call "scientific socialism", it was the root belief of Marx that socialism was the NATURAL end game evolution of human society. He believed that capitalism would destroy itself and people would naturally rise up in revolution against it to create a communist paradise. This was "Marxism" and to this point in history marxist theory has never once been proven correct. While there have been "communist" revolutions, they have NEVER been mass cultural revolutions like he describes. (cont)

(cont) the typical communist revolution of the 20th century was usually a small scale or general revolution against a corrupt or brutal or weak dictator, NOT an economic revolution against the economic elites; these revolutions often turned into communist revolutions thanks to guns and funding from the soviet union. EVEN the Russian revolution was never a true "communist" revolution as marx describes, rather the communists (Bolsheviks to be precise) were simply the most monstrous/cruel, and brutal of the contestants for the nation and simply won through pure brutality.
This is where communism gets a bit convoluted, see Lenin amended Marx's original works. See Marx still didn't explain the basic problem with socialism, meaning it didn't address why socialism had failed every time it had been tried. Lenin aimed to explain that. Lenin believed (in opposition to all other socialists, even Marx) that humans were CONDITIONED to be greedy by capitalism. He believed that humans would NEVER willingly chose communism thanks to that lifetime of brainwashing and conditioning. As a result he believed in a STRONG State was necessary to perform "social engineering" upon the people to achieve a "communist revolution". Once the communist revolution was achieved the state could "fade away", and communism, the "scientific" version of Utopian socialism would be achieved.
Yet again, socialism, Utopian socialism has failed in every experimental society it was tried. Only succeeding on a basic level with very small groups. Marxism has never been tried, as that organic communist revolution, contrary to Marx's belief never occurred. Leninism and it's descendant Maoism HAVE been tried. It's the only known functioning example of a fully socialist state; they've been tried and failed. For the same reason why Utopian socialism failed
Humans are greedy by nature, and lazy when they aren't rewarded for work. Socialism in all it's flavors can't overcome this.
