This is just another ''social science'' coupled with biology to make it seem legit. Terrible place to start making policy from. This is why ''science'' or ''statistics'' get criticized often for being bullshit to make policies from. Most research carried out is to either prove or disprove hypothesis and it's easy to make a setup where you get the results you want, but it would also mean the repeatability is low and that the correlations you find might be utter bullshit. Yet politicians are glad to make policy based on such research.

A huge problem is that there is a demand for studies that would be helpful in making proper policies. The studies that politicians and policy makers turn towards are also studies like this to justify their policies. It's rather easy to see why policies based on studies from social sciences can easily turn into disasters.

Yet for a lot of these research questions there currently is no good alternative way to approach the issues. But I'm quite surprised myself they used eye dilation as a measurement tool because it's not a very reliable way to measure arousal. It's one factor of measurement, a much better way to measure would be to have an analysis of brain areas that would be more active during arousal. I know nothing of biology, so I wouldn't exactly know but it's easy to see why this kind of research is flawed. To be completely honest there is much more idiotic research going on in social sciences. I would say you can throw around 9 out of 10 publications in the garbage bin since it's not useful for future research or for current issues.
