Almost everyone I talked to outside of Kiev/Lviv was pro Russia.

I was there this year when the Victory Day celebrations were going on. There was a police/army/merc presence there like just before Syria fell into war.

Still, one of the nicest places in Europe with regards to the architecture and certainly the women. My friend there runs one of those Ukrainian Brides things and it's a hoot to see what elderly Arab billionaires will pay to get a date (no sex, just a date) with a 10/10 peasant girl in her own country.

No, it was the result of fighting among oligarch clans and ukrainian mafia, they started the whole thing. US and Russia intervened only when the Crimea and War in Donbass started.

A large chunk of them were before the civil war in East. It ruined the region completely, so many of them felt betrayed by Russia and became ukrainian nationalists.

It was a result of Yanuk's idiotic policies, propaganda campaign by EU and Yanuk's excessive violent response to protesters. West just threw set it off, it didn't build it. There are even some clues to suggest that it was EU initiative and US was against it. "Fuck the EU" comment leaked from one of the high ups in State suggests it.

For Ukraine it's just a phase. EU/NATO will never accept them as a member because noone after Maidan noone wants to see how russia would react to that, that was kinda half the point behind Crimean Crisis. Besides that, in a generation Eastern Europe will realise that since their domestic industries can't compete with EU ones and they are suffering extreme brain drain from free movement and salary discrepancy, they have become not countries, but colonies. And then they'll have a choice, abandon their nationality or abandon EU. That will be interesting to wantch.
