You can pick your own deity (this is known as your ishTa deva or devata or devi), but there are also regional and ancestral deities (the latter is known as kula deva/devi).

Examples of regional deities are ganesha/vitthala for the province of maharashtra, durga [generally devi] for bengal, shiva for uttarakhanda and varanasi.
