That is how the Germans lost the war. If they had fought like the Japs - to the last man and last bullet. They would have stopped the Jews at the channel.
The problem was, they (Hitler specifically) were still thinking in terms19th Century intra European warfare with 'rules' and respect between foes.
They high command knew what would happen but at lot of the lower order thought it would be business as usual after the war.

Only two British really ever fought with the SS. Both pow,s and caught in Italy, they were captured by the LSSAH and asked if they could stay with the SS instead of being returned to a pow Cage. They were sworn in as Hiwis and fought in the Russian front and became well known and well liked. When the LAHSS returned to France to fight the two were put back in the pow population. Both survived the war and didnt serve any jail time Afterwards.
