2017 is the year of the Linux desktop. Why haven't you installed Linux yet?

2017 is the year of the Linux desktop. Why haven't you installed Linux yet?
I mean, it's obviously the most redpilled OS right now.

CUZ MUUH GAYYMES

>What is OpenGL

Linux is for retards. You might as well install Windows 10.

It's an open source graphics library. What about it? Have you seen the gaymes for Linux? They stink.

anything new in Linux? tried it a few times over the years and it was dogshit.

And what modern games get by with OpenGL?

Literally none.

If Linux didn't exist the world as we know it would cease to function overnight you fucking idiot

Good

also, fuck penguins

>What is FreeBSD?

>what is vulkan

>Free windows from college that i dropped out of
>Would've pirated it otherwise
I have no problem with Linux but everything just takes more effort. Games especially.

If I ever get a 2nd PC and just use it for media/ web browsing, I might just run linux on it.

Most backend servers run on Linux you damn kurwa

garbage

>It's an open source graphics library.
Nope, OpenGL is just the API for the GPU to adhere to, it has no implementation of its own

Are you familiar with Netrunner? It's a German distribution. Good shit.

It's got much better quality assurance than Linux.

I think games are the only reason to use Windows

Linux without nearly as many packages or support?

correct

>muh games
There is things to do using your computer other than games you degenerate fucks

It's a library of APIs. GL stands for Graphics Library.

Muh games and I like the biryani man licking my ear lobe at night

Problem being is that it is developed and maintained by freetards, whereas graphics card manufacturers work in an industry turning profit. Thus they naturally work towards DX instead, leaving GL the weird kid sitting by himself at the loser table

Lubuntu master race reporting in. Nearly 3 years virus free. Never had a laptop last more than a year and a half when I had (((windows)))

Anyone arch here? I'm stuck with debian and its derivatives for a long time already, looking for something new. Please suggest something with decent arguments. I'm a programmer so ease-of-use is not a factor. I do everything via sh anyway. Also, cinnamon > KDE.

>Ubuntu
>master race
Choose one

A meme os

...

>the penguin is the one sucking

freetard logic strikes

I've been using Arch for years mr Sup Forumsack, what do U need?

Arch is the almost ideal distro.
>highly customizable
>absolutely zero bloat
>installation is wicked fast
>always on the bleeding edge, update whenever you feel like it
>huge userbase and all the issues you could have, someone already had and documented it on the wiki

9/10, great distro

>tfw OP is spouting an almost 20 year old meme
>tfw there will never actually be a year of the Linux desktop

I use arch tried doing the gpu pass through but couldn't do it successfully cause Intel is a 2$ whore, so I am struck with windows for games

>it's obviously the most redpilled OS right now.
no

temple os is the most "x" pilled OS ever, and of all time

Do you use FreeBSD? Is it more stable?

Debian master race

>Anyone arch here
arch user reporting.

Just having the software you want on it is pretty cool, pacman and the AUR are great. I mostly use it to get the latest version of the kernel and drivers for my GPU. In a year I saw performances in some game improve a lot.

In the end all distro are the same. As long as you're not using mint or supporting canonical bullshit, there's not much to say.

IDK man windows has packed so much blatant spyware and abused their update system to distribute malware.
Honestly it's not going to be that hard to convince most people to drop it.

Linux is tolerable. The command line on it is awesome. Actually using it as a desktop OS is livable but annoying because shitty graphics, fonts, no polish, GUI design is decades behind.

this

I used it. But I switched back to Windows Vista. It's very stable and I really liked the ports method of handling packages.

>claims to be redpilled OS
>its not even true Unix

off yourself

Mint is the only acceptable as a gate way due you introduce to normies, and yeah fuck Ubuntu

>highly customizable
like any other distribution. It comes with nothing installed so it might be easier tho.
>absolutely zero bloat
Yes and no. Arch devs already said it was bloated, but as a user you don't see it and feel it, so that's okay I guess ?

>Solaris
>Gui

and who the fuck has a backend server at home as the main computer?
That's like saying you should buy a truck because they bring cheese to the shops

Any thoughts on Manjaro? Is it worth trying?

ReactOS is the definition of the redpill

Given how it has little installed, it's easy to customize, you don't need to remove shit you don't like and be afraid that something might break.

It is bloated, but for the average user it really isn't. I stopped using Arch, but would highly recommend it for an easy to learn and fun OS that does (almost) everythin you tell it to do.

I do, it's what computers are for. Mine is serving me all the time while yours is just computing NOP instructions over and ove r while you pay the electricity bills.

Manjaro is decent, it's Arch but using custom repositories.

I'd highly advise (if you wish for an easier Arch) to go with antergos.
It's literally arch linux + gui installer + one additional repository.

also
>polish flag
>not using PLD Linux
>nicememe

>yeah fuck Ubuntu
Ubuntu itself wasn't a problem. If you don't care of a bloated DE you can use it it's not my problem.
What I don't like is that canonical doesn't participate in the open source community, linux or whatever. On top of that they just create more fragmentation by creating their own stuff that no one will ever use (mir, launchpad, etc.) and also the fact they know everything you typed on your launcher.
Canonical should burn.

And you can't trust mint devs btw. Not after all the shit they made regarding the security of their distribution.

>you don't need to remove shit you don't like and be afraid that something might break.
iirc, all distribution have a minimal release anyway.

I was sure nobody outside of Poland heard of PLD. It is still used in my uni, which is kind of good, because nothing can teach you humility more than compiling your stuff on PLD.

>iirc, all distribution have a minimal release anyway.
wrong.

Most distributions refer to a "minimal" ISO as an ISO that is simply smaller, and pulls more packages from the internets when installing, it doesn't refer to the mount of bloat.
Altho most large ones come with minimal ones, but then again, if you could use a minimal (((Ubuntu))) or Fedora or Debian, why not just install Arch?

>use linux desktop
>literally no usable desktop programs exist
>"I have everything I need"

What exactly do you Linux desktop users do with your computers?

My guess is nothing. You browse Sup Forums (using the Firefox nightly build, which you falsely believe is the "safer branch" while the truth naturally is the opposite), practise drawing your anime girls in shitty GIMP and rack your brains over those very hard FizzBuzz and Euler problems you implement with emacs.

Meanwhile those of us who have jobs and real hobbies need functioning tools and programs

>I was sure nobody outside of Poland heard of PLD
Prawda, zartuje sobie :)

I use Ubuntu since version 12. Feels gud

I code, create 3d art, write articles, watch porn, play the occasional game, watch a movie, reverse engineer the odd binary, call people etc.

>2017
>falling for the "no software on linux" meme

>Bugsoft and EA shit
>no thanks

bump for great justice

>code
Code that will never see production use. You put it in dumb repositories on your GitHub, pretending it adds to your "portfolio"

>write articles
>watch porn
>play the occasional game
I could do that on DOS

>reverse engineer the odd binary
*linux binary. Inane crackmes made by other Linux people, since no software worth reversing is built for Linux.

>call people
Other Linux people, since people in the real world use proprietary programs for teleconferencing.
Just as I thought. You browsing Sup Forums would be the final nail in the coffin

Does Linux have a refugee firewall?

nice bait senpai.

I code on linux, because I like coding on linux. It's how I make sure I can put food on the table and luckily don't need to use .NET anymore.

I RE binaries because I think it's fun, weren't you the one to talk about "hobbies"?

Also:
>I could do that on DOS
why don't you then?

Sweden rly is cucked

Why so salty sven?

>Code that will never see production use
>since people in the real world use proprietary programs
Chances are if you ever get a boss that he will want you to use free software. I mean especially if you want to compete with all those cheap labor Africans, Indians and Arabs coming.

SWEDEN YES.
Truly cucked.

>No production use
Try every supercomputer and many production servers.

Windows does have some killer programs. If I used linux on my primary desktop I would just use wine or a VM to use the tools.
Those great programs aren't the OS though and many programs are multi-platform.

Why is it redpilled? Whats the benefits

I already have.

>Sweden rly is cucked
It is known.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Depends who you ask, since many won't use Linux for what it was build. They will look for Windows things.

>Still using Linux
2017 is the year of the GNU/Hurd desktop. I'm just keeping Linux around for games and Photoshop.

>Arch virgin reporting in
I still use C# as my main language, fuck python/java

Also, I do boot on windows for gayman

>Linux around for games and Photoshop
Sure thing buster, because that's what Linux is world famous for.

>what is wine
>what is SteamOS

Wine + Photoshop?
What's madness?

Still better than Gimp.

>when NEET losers try to argue

>Try every supercomputer and many production servers.

And what compiler would you use to target these Linux supercomputers (be it IA64 or you name it)? Intel's own compiler naturally. Does it run on Linux?

Reminder that if you're using Windows you suck Jewish cock

Latest Wine has completely blocked network and not to mention latest Acrobat Reader doesn't even works on Wine, so how many complications will you have installing it? That depends on many factors. The problem with Linux is that it's good you can do many thing, but it's very bad how many false/liar/missing information there is online that can break your system and every program in it. Even something as simple as upgrade can fuck up your system. The more you install, the more problems will come, especially when you delete things installed.

How's that GPU passthrough coming along? Frankly if you get 32GB ram, don't see any purpose of not using linux as host-OS

As a matter of fact icc runs on linux. Also IA64 is long dead.

Pychos prefer TempleOS protects you from CIA niggers

Depends on what language you write code in. GCC is one solid choice for C code.
The compiler is irrelevant though since you can compile the same code through different compilers or customize and extend your current compiler.

Point is linux is a fine platform even for production uses. I'm fairly certain due to security, stability, and performance linux is a solid choice for servers. Especially since you can customize and extend it for your specific application. NASA uses linux. NSA uses linux. Supercomputers use linux. Because it's good and it exists. If linux didn't exist or sucked they would either buy code to an OS or make their own.

>Gates
>Joo

This is wrong but let's skip to this turd's post:

>GCC is one solid choice for C code.
GCC is a toy compiler. You were the ones to mention "supercomputers". I don't work with supercomputers, but I work with systems scaling fast enough that we can't afford to not jump on any new CPU features. The sweaty greaseballs working with GCC have no clue how to utilize whatever the CPU manufacturer rolls out.

Yeah, for servers. This thread is about Linux desktop.

And if you use / waste your time contributing to Linux, you're an anti-white commie.

Show me a successful piece of software that runs primarily on Linux.
Linux is a waste of time, a wank toy for white nerds. Nothing more.

I have a MacBook for music, a meh desktop for being a sloth and a burner laptop with Kali for muh leet hacking.
honestly I'm over the whole battle of operating systems they all have advantages and disadvantages.
Except win 8. It can die along with Ubuntu and win me.

I use pirated win7, does that count?

>Pirated
>Windows
No. That's pretty red-pilled.

>.T too autistic to recognize bait

>autistic NEET weeb spergs from Sup Forums don't need to have their daily reality checks
>they are only pretending to be pedo losers

yeah right

Pretty much every console soft mod ever
Auto assembly lines, satellites etc
But you're trolling so you already knew that

It's a pain in the ass. I've gone through at least seven different wireless adapters just to find one that isn't complete shit. Also taught me to ahte Realtek.

So only windows desktops compile software ran on production servers?
More likely you have a build farm powered by linux that you send a build command to if you are so advanced.

Don't bring in production code as an argument if you don't want to talk about production environments.

I have.

Have fun being tracked by (((Windows 10))) you retarded cucks.

>Never had a laptop last more than a year and a half when I had (((windows)))

Just because you're a retard doesn't make it the OS's fault.

redpill me on linux

>people shitting on mint

Ok, what did I do wrong. Mint kde here

I've been a linux babby for the longest time, used Mint for 2-3 years now. I'm considering the switch to Arch because I'm tired of apt-repositories being so deprecated. Whenever I want to have the newest version for the latest programming meme, I see that the apt packages are about 2-3 versions older.

Bill Gates is on board with President Trump
Windows 10 confirmed most redpilled.
