the first inhabitants of mars will form their own nation planet on mars. earth will try to stop it but mars is too far away for any good space attack. earth and mars will be in race to build up space fleets. it will be one big space war until mars finally wins. everyone thought star wars would happen against an alien race but the first star wars will be against ourselves.

it will be centuries until Mars has the means and resources to claim independence. and by then, humanity will likely have mostly moved beyond the tribalism that would drive such a desire. humanity would arguably be a type 1 civilization at that point
