Texan here. It depends on what part of Texas we're talking about. 90℅ of it is, iny experience, a less exaggerated version of what they show in movies. Hospitality, family, and barbeques are a staple. When you get into our big cities such as Houston or Dallas is where things get bad. Austin is literally the Portland portrayed in the show Portlandia. It's all hipsters and bad people. San Antonio is pretty great tho.

I'm in Texas and I can't imagine how we're that much different than the rest of the country except that we eat a fuck load of Tex-Mex and root for different sports teams. I would say guns are a common unifier, because everyone, no matter race or political affiliation, has a little something. But i guess thats a common thing in the US in general. Other than that a lot of the rah rah Texas stuff is just everyone wearing cowboy-boot-style work boots and driving a pickup truck and talking about how great Texas is. I've been here for 25 years and i like it here, and I like the people, but I'm not really convinced there anything to the Texas meme that is still relevant.

I've never made it to the east coast (aside from Florida) and I've never been to south California. Other than that I've traveled throughout the mid-west regularly. I have family in the Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois areas, as well as north California and Alaska. I've spent some time in a couple of southern states aside from living in Texas my whole life, and spent a decent amount of time recently in South Dakota and Wyoming. My point was that the differences I see are mostly superficial. Sure, the big cities I've been to (Minneapolis, Chicago, New Orleans, Miami, Las Vegas) have a culture all their own, but once you get away from the city culture and head out into the rural areas, I don't ever see that much of a significant difference between the rural folk aside from our accents, the food we eat or the sports teams we root for. Wyoming is pretty much just like Texas in the amount of cowboy boots and pickup trucks, and that "stronk, independent, wild west mentality" you'll find here. Just less Mexicans and taco stands.

I'm moving back to San Antonio due to family reasons after 16 years in Austin exile for job reasons. (As in San Antonio basically had no tech jobs outside of military contractors.) But at least I spent most of it just inside of WIlliamson County, made some big cash in my last job, and I'm about to sell the house for twice what I paid for it.
