An SKS is, for all intents and purposes aside from its internal mechanisms, a semiautomatic AK-47. I own one, it's not that bad and it's cheap and easy to replace the stock with plastic if you want... Rifle is fine.
The PPsH-41 and 43 are submachine guns with high cyclic rates of fire... The ammunition it uses, 7.62x25mm, is more effective against light body armor than almost any that was not specifically designed for that purpose.

High quality formations would be conserved for intense action... Raids, penetrating assaults, plugging holes in the line made by enemy attacks and generally winning the war.

The C7 used by Canada, Holland and Denmark? It's a pretty good AR that was meant to stand up well to abuse and isn't likely to be replaced... The various other firearms used by smaller NATO states are okay.
5.56x45mm and 5.45x39mm ammunition are functionally similar. Not a huge lead by either in ballistic performance that would be noticed in combat.
Hell, 7.62x39mm isn't that bad either and it arguably hits harder than 5.56x45.
Optics can give you an advantage. Iron sights are crap. But you can put a rail and a laser dot sight on anything.
NATO's advantages are organizational and institutional. We're more cohesive. That's it.
