Robert Boyle is the father of chemistry and his book 'the sceptical chemist' is still widely studied today. Francis Beaufort invented the Beaufort Scale which is still used for measuring wind speed. Robert Mallet is the father of seismology. John Philip Holland invented the modern submarine, and to go along with the torpedo the Louis Brennan the father of the torpedo.
I can go on if you would like.

Quick question for the Irish, how much of a role did the US have in your country's legalization of gay marriage?
A lot of influence/funding on the anti side, couldn't tell you on the pro side.
(It's the same with the abortion debate)
The US influence was against gay marriage? What influenced them toward it?
them = Ireland, it = gay marriage
sorry for the vagueness
James Joyce.

I'm sure the organisations campaigning for gay marriage have plenty of links to US organisations, and general cultural osmosis played a role.
But you have to understand that Ireland went very quickly from a very conservative place, to a very liberal place, partially as a reaction to being fed up with the Church's shit (and child abuse).
Religious conservatism is non existent, our governing party that introduced the referendum is the most conservative relevant party we have (also closed the Vatican embassy for a while and told the Church to keep its nose out of Irish affairs). Arguably this is more an economic conservatism and not a social one. Our two major parties are extremely centrist, with only mild differences (maybe the other one is a bit more economically left, and a bit more socially conservative).
Every major party backed gay marriage, every public body, major media outlets and major institution backed gay marriage. We had bizarre images as IRA figures celebrating the result with our favourite drag act. The only people against it were regarded as fringe weirdos, and the Church, who can fuck off.
My 90 year old grandmother, who said of gay marriage "I'm afraid I'm a very conservative person" voted, because although she felt it went against her religious beliefs, she didn't think it was appropriate to impose her beliefs on how other people live.
Daily reminder lads, Irish Pub Folk > IRA

Made a good staging ground for Scottish borderlands on their way to America I guess.
The IRA had a purpose in the fight for independence but now they are just a pain for everyone involved. De Valera actually banned the IRA back in the 30's and imprisoned the commander Moss Twoomey.
