Only then can they join on equal footing the Mediterranean Islamic countries and the Orthodox east.

We need to forcibly reform all three of these religions (plus Judaism) if we want to be finally united. I believe that the opening that Pope Francis is doing towards Orthodoxy and Islam might be a helpful tool towards that. I can easily see, in the not so distant future, the Pope and the Patriarchs recognizing each other's authority (with each one sacrificing a bit of their own relative power). In order to do that, Orthodox patriarchs must first free themselves from the servilism towards their secular States (Russia might prove a huge hindrance in that). Islam might be impossible to reconcile in its current form, though. What I see as possible is the emergence of a "heretical" movement in Islam that recognizes both Christ as the Messiah, the son of God, and Mohammad as a prophet who was to bring the word of Christ to Arab people, but whose word was twisted in the writing of the Quran
