No, Hans. The man who died today was one of the main conspirators against the regime we had until 1974, the Estado Novo. It was a conservative, authoritarian clerical corporatist state, with António de Oliveira Salazar as Head of State. Soares actively conspired with the Communist Party and other radical leftists to overthrow the state, and so was exiled or thrown in jail several times throughout the years. Then, when Salazar fell off a chair and banged his head on the floor, becoming forever incapacitated, Soares said he was "euphoric" and returned to Portugal. He then aided the Armed Forces Movement in 1974 to overthrow the government in what is now called the Carnation Revolution (and a very gay one, if you ask me). He then became Prime Minister, established his Foundation (a money embezzling scam most likely) and essentially contributed to the sorry state our country is today.

Fiscal conservatism has been tied to Passos/PaF and was rejected as economism and austerity. In terms of real fiscal conservatism, honestly I think we should have never purchased those submarines, not in these times at least. That's fiscal conservatism. Paying down debt. Fighting corruption. Keeping the government from getting too big and irresponsible. I think a new party with those ideals could do well under certain conditions... which are not present at the moment. The problem doesn't necessarily stem from Portugal's reluctance to accept the ideology but originates from our current dangerous predicaments that don't give the leeway necessary for laissez fair fiscal conservatism, or anything else really. Portugal is treading a fine line and people are afraid.

I agree with that you said. But we're stuck between a rock and a hard place. If people don't have their gibs, they chimp out and we lost. But if they do get their gibs, we can't do anything to move forward and they chimp out and we lose. I think the reason why we're in this mess is because of the 80s/90s boom, where we used our reserves and cheap labor to create a welfare state which became unsupportable after all the capital stock had been drained. Now we're the beggars of Europe, and we're all on anti-depressants because we literally wuz kangz and now we're nothing.
