Encrypting your data

So TrueCrypt has been dead in the water for some years now and I guess it's time to move on.

What is a safe alternative?
Safe = open source, no backdoors, active community

I still use it because it's the easiest way to hide my retarded porn from others. Nothing illegal so I don't care if the FBI can crack it or something.

Is VeraCrypt safe? It's a continuation of TrueCrypt apparently.

Just fyi, there's some vulnerabilities in TrueCrypt
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrueCrypt#Security_audits

Yeah, I know. I just needed something a step above "hide this folder"

I agree it's still good at hiding, not securing, one-offs that you don't want others using the same computer to see. I use it to hide some source code.

If OP wants real security you needs to look into setting up full disk encryption. OSX has FileVaut and it's easy as fuck to set up. Winshit has BitLocker but you need the upgraded version of Winshit to use it. Linux is more complicated wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Disk_encryption .

Prob not unless you go verify the source code line-by-line yourself, which you won't. You have to go under the assumption that none of this shit is secure, backdoors exist in all encryption programs/services, especially in OS built-in stuff. Everything can be broken into by the FBI/NSA if they really wanted your shit. I don't give a fuck though because I'm a good patriotic murrican and don't do anything illegal anyways.

Good luck.

If you're just looking to encrypt a set of folders, you can try AES Crypt. Downside of it is that it doesn't have a visual interface.

This looks convenient as hell for hiding porn, I might try this.

I know, right? I use it to encrypt the contents of my pen drives. Pretty safe if you ask me.

>worrying about your software not having backdoors when running windows

I encrypt my shit with dm-crypt, because i am using Linux.
And if i need to access the encrypted partitions on Windows, i use Libre Crypt.

VeraCrypt

and those vulnerabilities have nothing to do with encryption, they have to do with someone who already has access on the system getting more access

if someone already has access to your truecrypt system you're fucked whether they have admin rights or not. truecrypt only prevents people from taking your disk out and reading from it

ITT: Pedophiles

You have to use an older version of it for it to still be secure.

The newest version has the issues.

This assume AES isn't broken already (which it probably is). In which case it would take 2-3s to break your CP folder open

>thinking there are no backdoors in linux or mac
You are a good goy, aren't you

on windows you can be assured all your data is already compromised. at least on linux you don't know that.

>What I don't know doesn't hurt

This.
If someone is able to get access to your PC while you are logged in, you are fucked anyway.

And if you just encrypt one drive, but not the whole OS, then someone who has access to your PC for a short time, could just install some keylogger and you will be fucked.

Honastly the intelligence / police community seems to be incompetent as fuck.

Yes they probably have experts who can decrypt anything but unless you are terror suspect numero uno, there's no way they will allocate those ressources on you.

>Not using the internet on an air gapped device

Fucking n00b

VeraCrypt was recently audited and it's deemed safe, I believe

They're like the TSA- they might miss the known jihadist with the handgun hidden in his suitcase, but GOD HELP YOU if you think you can take more than 6 ounces of shampoo.

PP% of these are usually paranoid people. Unless you work for gubs or have a Jealous GF (or BF for men) ZOG really not going to target you personally. Datamine yes. you as Jean LeFleur? not often. I encrypt and use PGP but then I have can admit probably autistic.

These threads turn into Tech Signaling for autists for shit that will never happen.

>for men
for faggots/trannies, which there seem to be a lot of these days.

VeraCrypt has that tinfoil hat protection

"As an example, when the system partition is encrypted, TrueCrypt uses PBKDF2-RIPEMD160 with 1000 iterations whereas in VeraCrypt we use 327661. And for standard containers and other partitions, TrueCrypt uses at most 2000 iterations but VeraCrypt uses 655331 for RIPEMD160 and 500000 iterations for SHA-2 and Whirlpool."

you shouldn't be using windows

you need to ditch Windows and switch to Linux. Pretty much every distro will set up full-disk encryption for you in the installer.

Ian was working on a linux distro that wasn't backdoored. RIP

>not writing your own encryption software

can you redpill me on this program? I've seen it again but what does it do exactly?

colombian english strong

Can get you arrested :(

wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm-crypt/Encrypting_an_entire_system

truecrypt is unmaintained
veracrypt is pajeet

Only answer is Linux in FDE/dm-crypt
you can also try yubikey + grub password and password your BIOS but avoid using BIOS-TPM ever

also avoid UEFI ring2 exploitable BIOS

if possible use libreboot compatible hardware.

>I still use it because it's the easiest way to hide my retarded porn from others.
You'll be surprised to know microsoft screenshots desktops into thumbnails while a complete hash of all your files are compressed into ~3MB sent over UDP traffic that can't be intercepted by ring3 or virtual ring0 programs. Windows 7 and above is worse spyware than the previous.

>Pretty much every distro will set up full-disk encryption for you in the installer.
no. avoid anything that encourages CPU microcode updates and NEVER patch or update the BIOS.

Explain.

serio? phahaha
don't play with the algorithms, son
it's a dangerous thing, can get you arrested

>Prob not unless you go verify the source code line-by-line yourself

this. the meme that there is anything you can do to secure data while using the internet all willy-nillly needs to stop.

if you refuse to read code and/or develop your own security solution than what in the fuck makes you think Mounir Idrassi should save your ass?

what about the defected devs who sell protection while peddling exploits?

Wat

I liek to make hard to the nsa to farm my comments
Fuck autocorret.

>Storing anything useful or incriminating on your hard drive instead of the cloud meme.

At last I truly see.

I have nothing against encryption, but what do you guys need to hide? I have some weird (legal) porn, but it's not worth encrypting.

I don't know. Bitcoins n shit?

I wonder why he died..?

*ATCHU

his twitter was absolutely fine until suddenly 'police brutality' tweets that are out of context and next thing we know he committed (((suicide)))

since then, Debian confirmed backdoor.
t. leet

Personally don't care about my reputation when I die and people begin going through my shit but my family and friends don't need my shit on their shoulders. It's more for them than for myself.

HackThePlanet had already confirmed the compromising of Debian by NSA way before his death.

before those ridiculously fake tweets some ((people)) proposed putting something in debian project and he rejected it.

same thing happened with jacob appelbaum fiasco which confirmed tor backdoor and frequent 'firefox defaults' inherited by tor browser leaking anonymity (hes also a tor developer fyi)

Is this max tinfoil paranoia and FUD or do you have links to the science that backs up your claims?

>microsoft screenshots desktops into thumbnails while a complete hash of all your files are compressed into ~3MB sent over UDP traffic that can't be intercepted by ring3 or virtual ring0 programs

Is this max tinfoil paranoia and FUD or do you have links to the science that backs up your claims? I am particularly interested in this one. It seems to me that Microsoft exposes itself to a massive and potentially bankruptcy-inducing lawsuit if they have written into their OS a script that screenshots your desktop and then sends that info out over your ISP. Prove this claim of yours.

>TrueCrypt has been dead in the water for some years now

By "dead in the water", I assume you mean that it is no longer being updated. I'm not sure it needs updating. It is complete and it is reliably safe. By "it", I mean TrueCrypt 7.1a.
