This is all too true. The left have been running rings around the conservatives for decades and conservatives don't know it. They get a few electoral victories here and there and as such think things are going well. What has actually happened is the liberals have residually pulled conservatives to the left with each generation. The reason for this is conservatives aren't honest with themselves whereas the is. The mainstream left draws its inspiration and vigor from forces on the far left. They discard bits and pieces that the public won't find agreeable but there is a give and take dynamic between the mainstream left and the far-left.
Where do conservatives get their ideas? From forces to the right of them? No. They get them from the same place as the left, just at a much slower pace. This is why the most popular "right wing" party in my country legalised gay marriage and refuses to do anything substantial about immigration.
