>salvation I believe the stance is that there is no salvation outside of the Church. Salvation also requires faith and through faith will come works that will aid in our salvation. However nobody knows that he/she will be saved definitely, nor can we comprehend the extent of the mercy of our Lord.

"Similarly we also, who by His will have been called in Christ Jesus, are not justified by ourselves, or our own wisdom or understanding or godliness, nor by such deeds as we have done in holiness of heart, but by that faith through which Almighty God has justified all men since the beginning of time. Glory be to Him, forever and ever, Amen." - St. Clement of Rome (Letter to the Corinthians, par. 32)
"Human beings can be saved from the ancient serpent in no other way than by believing in him who, when he was raised up from the earth on the tree of martyrdom in the likeness of sinful flesh, drew all things to himself and gave life to the dead." - Irenaeus (Against the Heresies, IV, 2, 7).
"Indeed, this is the perfect and complete glorification of God, when one does not exult in his own righteousness, but recognizing oneself as lacking true righteousness to be justified by faith alone in Christ." - St. Basil the Great (Homily on Humility, PG 31.532; TFoTC vol. 9, p. 479)
"For you believe the faith; why then do you add other things, as if faith were not sufficient to justify? You make yourselves captive, and you subject yourself to the law." - St. John Chrysostom (Epistle to Titus, Homily 3, PG 62.651)
"Some without fulfilling the commandments think that they possess true faith. Others fulfill the commandments and then expect the Kingdom as a reward due to them. Both are mistaken." - Mark the Ascetic (On Those who Think TheyAre Made Righteous by Works: Two Hundred Twenty Six Texts, 18)

There is only one path of salvation and that is through the church. Regardless, the church is not simply an institution but the sum of its parts and so denominations have much to gain from what of the true church that they have but what differences they have mean their communion is always a limited one. Regardless, just as with the virtuous pagans (people who found God's will and lived it, knowing God in essence without knowing anything of God or Christianity from the religion itself) people can find virtue and receive grace. The issue with saying virtuous pagans would be saved would be that they are unbaptized (which is a hotly debated issue still today) but the Catholic Church holds that many denominations to still have valid baptisms so it would not be an issue for many non-Catholics.
Salvation comes from those will accept the offer of it at death but as that offer is union with God those who lead sinful lives (who would move from God's will innately) would reject God just the same.
Catholics do not have a clear answer on whether Hell is a place (like Protestant clarify it or how its comically applied) or a state (as Orthodox clarify it, where all the afterlife is union with God and heaven/hell/purgatory is a disposition towards it) but recognizes it as an eternal separation from God's mercy.

>Clement >pope Hermas says he's a secretary >Peter >pope Peter says he's a fellow elder Sorry, there wasn't even as single bishop of Rome until the 140s
>Sorry, there wasn't even as single bishop of Rome until the 140s
The blessed apostles [Peter and Paul], then, having founded and built up the Church, committed into the hands of Linus the office of the episcopate. Of this Linus, Paul makes mention in the Epistles to Timothy. To him succeeded Anacletus; and after him, in the third place from the apostles, Clement was allotted the bishopric. This man, as he had seen the blessed apostles, and had been conversant with them, might be said to have the preaching of the apostles still echoing [in his ears], and their traditions before his eyes. Nor was he alone [in this], for there were many still remaining who had received instructions from the apostles. In the time of this Clement, no small dissension having occurred among the brethren at Corinth, the Church in Rome dispatched a most powerful letter to the Corinthians, exhorting them to peace, renewing their faith, and declaring the tradition which it had lately received from the apostles…. From this document, whosoever chooses to do so, may learn that He, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, was preached by the Churches, and may also understand the apostolical tradition of the Church, since this Epistle is of older date than these men who are now propagating falsehood, and who conjure into existence another god beyond the Creator and the Maker of all existing things. To this Clement there succeeded Evaristus. Alexander followed Evaristus; then, sixth from the apostles, Sixtus was appointed; after him, Telephorus, who was gloriously martyred; then Hyginus; after him, Pius; then after him, Anicetus. Sorer having succeeded Anicetus, Eleutherius does now, in the twelfth place from the apostles, hold the inheritance of the episcopate.

1 Corinthians 15:1-2: Now I would remind you, brethren, in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast—unless you believed in vain.
Colossians 1:21-23: And you, who once were estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him, provided that you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel which you heard
2 Peter 2:20-22: For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overpowered, the last state has become worse for them than the first . . . It has happened to them according to the true proverb, the dog turns back to his own vomit, and the sow is washed only to wallow in the mire.

Pope Celestine V was too pure for this world! We didn't deserve him reeeeeeeeeeee!
>He became a Benedictine monk at Faifoli in the Diocese of Benevento when he was 17. He showed an extraordinary disposition toward asceticism and solitude, and in 1239 retired to a solitary cavern on the mountain Morrone, hence his name (Peter of Morrone). Five years later he left this retreat, and went with two companions to a similar cave on the even more remote Mountain of Maiella in the Abruzzi region of central Italy, where he lived as strictly as possible according to the example of St. John the Baptist. Accounts exist of the severity of his penitential practices.
>The cardinals assembled at Perugia after the death of Pope Nicholas IV in April 1292. After more than two years, a consensus had still not been reached. Pietro, well known to the cardinals as a Benedictine hermit, sent the cardinals a letter warning them that divine vengeance would fall upon them if they did not quickly elect a pope. Latino Malabranca, the aged and ill dean of the College of Cardinals cried out, "In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, I elect brother Pietro di Morrone." The cardinals promptly ratified Malabranca's desperate decision. When sent for, Pietro obstinately refused to accept the papacy, and even, as Petrarch says, tried to flee, until he was finally persuaded by a deputation of cardinals accompanied by the king of Naples and the pretender to the throne of Hungary.
>In the formal instrument of renunciation, he recited as the causes moving him to the step: "The desire for humility, for a purer life, for a stainless conscience, the deficiencies of his own physical strength, his ignorance, the perverseness of the people, his longing for the tranquility of his former life". Having divested himself of every outward symbol of papal dignity, he slipped away from Naples and attempted to retire to his old life of solitude.

excuse this blog post but I had an interesting experience this week
I say I'm Catholic and cultivate some Latin knowledge to read my Vulgate, but I'm not really a good person. Downright prick to be honest. I work in San Francisco and will purposefully push people out of my way and curse at them if they're fucking around on the sidewalk. I make a good living, am excellent at my job but apart from that I purposefully avoid any possible contact with any other person including family.
So this week I gave an order at Subway, and the guy gives me a fountain drink, not a bottle so I gave it back, but an old homeless woman asked if she could have it instead. For some reason I just paid for it (would usually tell them to fuck off) and she enjoyed her soda.
I felt really good about this for quite a while-- but not in a self aggrandizing way. Not from vanity I hope. It honestly made me feel good about things.
i know people say this over and over but is helping people really the way to happiness or at least peace? Holy fuck what a bother. There goes all my time.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Catholic church, and ever since I revieved the Holy Spirit I've had issues finding "the real church", as most my experiences have been revolving around God and Christ and the immense power that you can feel from experiencing being saved - and not so much following certain rituals etc.. I was a Muslim but now thinking of converting to Christianity but I am really struggling with one particular issue....In Islam when a woman is raped she is not forced to carry out the reminder of the horrific mentally scarring incident that happened to her for 9 months, instead it is permissible to abort the fetus before 4 months when it is considered the soul is breathed into it.
I'm just really struggling to come around tot he Christian view that a woman should have to carry a rape pregnancy, the mental health abuse would be too much and it would be a constant reminder of the invasion of the womans body by an agressor. She would relive the invasion of her body by evil every single day she carries the pregnancy.
I'm sorry for my naivety, I feel very strongly around this issue as I had a friend who was raped and was made to carry the pregnancy and she killed herself. I could see the dread on her eyes, it was as if she was already dead.

Anyway. I'm no christian nor am I neo-pagan. It doesn't matter anyway. What I'd like to know is WHY you believe that what you believe (and therefore certainly the bible) is true at all ?
I mean the standard answer for >why is there so much evil and kiddy diddling and torture and all that shit is apparently something alike >god gave us free will and will therefore not intervene.
That's by no means satisfying as an answer. Especially when you take into account that you deem your "god" to be all-knowing, all-loving and omnipotent. That means he knew that all that would happen before. That leads me back to my initial question, beacuse I perceive all this (especially things taught in scripture) as a huge contradiction.

>The sources actually from that time are more reliable than the ones from after that time says who? >Ignatius Ignatius was a catholic. You can't claim he didn't acknowledge the bishop of Rome just because he didn't directly addressed him in his writings, it's basially cherrypicking, filling the gaps and damage control at its finest. Your claim that there was no bishop of Rome is based on your wishful thinking and not on evidence. He speaks of the catholic church quite often btw. As usual the problem here is that you have never read the Church Fathers, at best you just read cherrypicked and twisted quotes of them used by James White to justify his heresies. Your problem is that you are proudly deceived.

I'll give a proper response soon mate. Currently doing something.
Hebrews 10:26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left.
Yes through Faith alone, but our works are also important. If we continue to sin against the Lord after accepting him then we are not saved.
James 2:14-18 - What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

No. I'm asking you why you believe your belief to be true and not just fairy tales. That's a simple question, though I'm well aware of that the answer might not be so trivial
Brayden Hill
God created the world good and humanity is *essentially* (in its very nature considered in itself) also good. God gave man a special place in Creation. The devil was rather jealous of this, thought it was a bad idea and sought to prove it by having man rebel against God his Creator.
Evil therefore has sway in creation via man and the devils; however, should God prevent all the evil this makes possible, he'd basically be siding with the devil - does that make sense?
It's called redemption for a reason: God is redeeming all His works, both man and Creation. That's why it was so significant when Jesus argued that He was returning to things as they were "in the beginning" in the case of marriage. Man, being redeemed, can assume his proper station in creation thus vindicating man, in a sense, or God's works and carrying on the process of undoing "the works of the devil," which Jesus came to destroy.
Colton Diaz
The claim of authority and its historicity would be the easiest method if we're parsing worldviews. If you're discussing the church between all worldviews then its much more difficult and must be asserted bit-by-bit.
Regardless the best advice I had been told when becoming Catholic and the advice that continues to let me make these threads is to evangelize by example. Pursue God as we should and it will come.
Thanks for speaking up and thank you for the big question, user. The most basic of answers comes from and its very apt for what we're speaking about but I would add that the Catholic Church would disagree with the understanding of the soul. All things are made up of matter and of soul innately and so when the organism begins is when the is formed as well.
It seems this judgement is done out of love but is mistaken of how they grasp reality.
Alexander Martinez
I've been an agnostic most of my life, although I do believe in that Jesus bloke. >In Islam when a woman is raped she is not forced to carry out the reminder of the horrific mentally scarring incident that happened to her for 9 months, instead it is permissible to abort the fetus before 4 months when it is considered the soul is breathed into it. Alright this I believe is the main problem that you are probably having. In Christianity we believe that the moment of conception is the beginning of life, IE Soul is there as soon as the sperm fertilizes the egg. Science backs this up in all its scientific literature that human life starts at conception.
It is probably a Muslim teaching that the soul comes in four months into pregnancy. But from the moment a human is conceived it has a soul and to kill it would be murder.
Yes it is horrible that such instances exist. But it is not the fault of the child. Abortion would also cause mental problems to the Mother. Rape just in general is awful and causing mental health issues. But the baby is innocent.
>I'm sorry for my naivety, I feel very strongly around this issue as I had a friend who was raped and was made to carry the pregnancy and she killed herself. I could see the dread on her eyes, it was as if she was already dead. I am terribly sorry to hear that.
This conversation probably requires a lot of back and forth talking.
Christopher Lee
You have to do things step by step. You can't accept Christianity as true if first you don't come to understand that a God creator exists, and then you realise that he is necessarily allmighty, omniscent etc. etc. You have to ponder on things and in the meanwhile it would help to try and pray for guidance. I think the process of finding faith is an interior one. I think you first have to understand what makes you unhappy in life, what is wrong with you and in your life. If you are satisfied of this world, you'll never attain a higher level of truth, neither will you find God. Because God resists the proud, and speaks to the meek of heart. Basically you need humility. Then read. Understand the role of the Church in the history of the West, and study what Catholic doctrine ACTUALLY is, and not what atheists and protestants strawman it as.
Jaxon Collins

Romans 4:8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin If you commit a venial sin will it be imputed to you? If you commit a mortal sin will it be imputed to you? The ecclesiology of Rome in Hermas is clearly one of a plurality of elders. He is not pope because there is no pope, plain and simple. >Hebrews 10:26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left. That's because the new creation hates it's sin and does not love it, the one who desires sin loves their sin. >Yes through Faith alone, but our works are also important. Paul says if you add one thing to faith you are anathema >James 2:14-18 The key verse is verse 18 as this proves the passage is about how to tell a pre-existant state of justification in a fellow believer. Helping people is a real way to happiness. At some point you have to realize that helping larger and larger amounts of people at a time brings more and more happiness. >Posted something like this a couple of days ago but diddnt get any helpful answers I can see why you didn't get many helpful answers, in situations like yours that many of us have never experienced it is hard for us to understand your situation. And as such we may not know the right way in which to talk to you and give you answers. For starters I guess I'll say that the fact you're in here looking for answers shows that the Holy Spirit is beaconing for you and trying to bring you to him.
I guess it would help us if you tell us a bit more about your situation?
>How can you convert someone who has had a shit life if we take away people being shitty and instead focus on the natural side I've had everything I aimed for taken away from me by illness how can I believe in a god when to me he has never been there Like I said above, I'm afraid I can't quite give you direct answers like others. I would like to hear a bit more about your illness or situation if you care to tell me. And I know at the moment it may not seem like it, or you may not understand or believe me. But God has always been with you even through the suffering you've been through. And obviously he doesn't take pleasure in it.

How much do you think the Vatican is hiding? I'm a believer an all but you gotta admit the Vatican has done some shady shit through the years. Also what about the ancient texts that show additional lost information about Christ?

Life begins at the moment of conception, with a present soul. If the woman were to abort she would be a murderer. Being a rape victim is no excuse, she should emulate Jesus and forgive her attacker, and celebrate the gift of life visited upon her.
