Right now I alternate between PHAT and 5/3/1. You can google them they're both great routines, but best for intermediate lifters

To start I would recommend 1-2 months of 5x5 stronglifts. Put the ego aside, do very light weight and master perfect form on bench press, deadlifts and squats.

IMO 5/3/1 is the best powerlifting routine and PHAT is best for putting on mass

6'1". 220 pounds. I have a disgusting belly and a slight double chin (only when I bend my face/head down). Was 175-185 pounds in high school when I was a fit athlete, so I can carry a decent amount of weight with my frame but certainly not 220. I'd guess I could carry up to 190 and still look good.

I started a cardio routine and diet about a week ago to try to lose that fat within five months. Is it wise for me to lift too? I worked out in high school solely to stay in shape for soccer and baseball, so I don't really know anything about lifting for the sake of lifting. I would pick either lifting or cardio. If you're doing intense exercise for more than 5 hours a week there's a high chance you're going to start overtraining in which case you'll lose muscle and gain fat

I honestly would still recommend lifting over cardio for weight loss. Lifting will increase muscle mass, which will increase basal metabolic rate. Cardio will just put you in a faster states, you will lose fat and muscle and metabolism will slow down. Additionally lifting burns calories for like 24 hours after your workout because your body is recovering like crazy. Cardio you don't burn extra calories for more than 3-4 hours.

Having said all of that, you could start doing a 5x5 stronglifts, or you could start with upper and lower split.

Day A: upper body 3x5 lifts like babrbell rows, bench press, chin ups
day b: 3x5 lower body compound lifts like deadlift squat etc

AXBXABX weekly schedule or something like that

Start slow and don't overdo it

Also depends on your goals

For test boosting, low reps of heavy weight

For fat loss best would probably be high volume so maybe 3x10 of all the lifts I mentioned

Eccentric movements get you sorer. The only way around it is consistent and ample (not over-) training. Squatting make you sore? Do it 2-3x week. When you take a week "off", train at reduced percentages.
