This raises a question for me. Is there a point after which people, even if they are trying to better themselves, may not be forgiven? For example, would a murderer be forgiven simply for trying to better himself? Or maybe a rapist?
Well part of Christian teaching is to fight sin. This is when Christendom was still a thing so multiculturalism wasn't much a teaching then and people cared about the welfare of their people, especially in relation to something as important as this. In fact, multiculturalism and "tolerance" as a western virtue began because of people who (while still promoting Protestant thought and the anti-Catholic worldview) wanted to settle the Protestant/Catholic religious wars with a truce. This became the rise of secularism.

Okay, I understand. It does still feel a little wrong to me though. I personally couldn't find room to forgive such a person, and I find it rather unpleasant that such a person could be forgiven. To me, finding forgiveness is about righting a wrong and I just can't see how one would right such a big wrong as murder or rape.
This is my first major clash with Christianity, I'm not sure how to resolve it going forward. I suppose I'll have to spend a lot more time thinking about it and whether it makes sense to me.

It's the repenting bit that really clashes with me. To me, repenting means to make up for what you have done but I don't see how such a person could make up for such an action. And, I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a fedora here, finding forgiveness in God seems a little like a cop-out from the responsibilities put upon someone who has done something so wrong as murder or rape. If they repent in the eyes of God, then what of the victim? The perpetrator is forgiven and put at rest but the victim (not of murder obvioulsy) must continue to live in a state of hell on Earth.

This is quite a relief to hear really. I'm sure I'll hear a contradiction at some point, as from what I've seen there's a lot of contradiction between different sects, but thankyou for the answer user.
