He's an extremely powerful man and even if you hadn't heard his name before you knew and respected how important the CEO and chairmen of ExxonMobil must be.
He seemed to come out of the blue into Trump's cabinet. He certainly wasn't an old friend of Donald Trump. But he actually came on the recommendation Cheney, Rice, Gates, the former Bush administration. The real establishment. The public face of the deep state.
Compared to these people, Donald Trump and those closest to him are outsiders. In the view of these people, Donald Trump is a second rate real estate developer and reality TV star. He doesn't know the meaning of public service. He is not a serious man. Barely winning a populist campaign makes him president by technicality and doesn't provide a mandate to rule. Do you think Cheney et al have any qualms about undermining the President chosen by the American people?
Secretary of State is the most senior and important cabinet position and seen doubly so by the neocons and realists who want to put him there. Tillerson's relationship with Russia is contrasted with Trump's by the fact that Tillerson was expected to and did squeeze every penny out of his Russian counterparts as possible while the Russians take advantage of Trump to undermine US prestige, moral leadership and trust in the US. Tillerson's Russia connections are an asset while Trump's may lead to his downfall. Tillerson is the American leader with the most experience dealing with Ryssia at a time when Russian action against the US and US policy is at its highest.
Tillerson is being positioned by powerful, hidden or relatively unscrutinized actors at a time of unprecedented danger and uncertainty to protect the American interest. With corruption and scandal rampant at the very top of the Trump establishment, he may even be positioned to eventually assume the highest office.
So are we officially entering the Final Fantasy VII timeline now?
When can I get infused with Mako energy?

Just look at the ongoing ethics/background check/conflict of interest scandals WRT Trump's band of thieves err I mean cabinet.
Tillerson quickly divested his stock to be in full compliance and is making a favourable impression even with liberal democratic senators like Chris Coons.
Other influential individuals have also come out in support of Tillerson, making him look like one of few good picks by Trump.
What makes you think he's a conservative? The few times he's publicly participated in the debate on social issues he has
1. Come out in support of allowing gays in the Boy Scouts, an organization he is highly influential in, and lead for a time
2. Stated Anthropogenic Global Warming is real and we need to do something about it
3. Promoted common core, writing a piece in the WSJ in support of it
That's not cherry picking, that's pretty much all he's done when he wasn't running Exxon.

You stupid fucks still haven't realized Trump is in the pocket of the Zionist establishment. They pay billions in focus groups, polls, studies, and determined that the political opinion was blowing against the democrats and in favor of more nationalist ideas so they co-opted the so-called "alt right" before it could even emerge.
Seriously, take a hard look at Trump. A real estate mogul with connections with Wall Street that used to star in a reality show, and had his daughter married to a Jewish banker. This is your anti-establishment candidate?? Seriously?
Not only Trump supports Israel and its continual siphoning of US taxpayer money, he also opposes the Iran nuclear deal and wants to help Israel achieve its foreign policy aims there.
Trump was elected to finish the job Bush couldn't do - Invade Iran for the benefit of the kikes. 911, Afghanistan and Iraq were part of a roadmap to surround Iran with NATO bases for the final war, the cherry on top of the kike strategy to dominate the Middle East.
Trump WILL invade Iran, he has been elected for that purpose. Anything else is smoke and mirrors.
