It was awesome.

You could jerk off to 20 sec clips that took an hour to download.

ZERO NIGGERS
NONE
NADA
NO NIGGERS ANYWHERE

shit
like really really really shit.
like public wifi shit

fuck off

If you've heard the sound of a modem ..this post will trigger a flashback.

Extremely slow by today's standards.
I sort of miss the dial up tone.

It was like a modern day wild wild west, a new frontier for the modern age. It was the first time most people were getting a glimpse at how evil and depraved people around the world are.

Agreed. I had dial up back in the early days... I rarely ever came across black people online.

Porn downloading was very slow and there wasn't that much variety.

If you weren't using the forums or chatrooms there really wasn't a whole lot to do online.

...

imagine Sup Forums, but everywhere

no niggers are women anywhere

back in the day some readical lefties actually thought computers were racist, i shit you not, due to them not being available to niggers because you actually needed money.

Who /red alert 2/ here?

>private chat rooms
Cybering. Roleplaying. Talking about anime.
>public chat rooms
a/s/l?

different

KKKEEERRRR KKKEEERRRR KKKEEERRRR

You've got mail.

lots of porn
chat rooms
getting bitches to scan their tits or gtfo
a/s/l?

Nah it was excellent desu.

Only downloads where slow, websites weren't overloaded with complete horseshit and took the same time to load.

>Not hacking MSN chat rooms giving yourself the golden hammer and banning anyone who disagrees with you.
>Not deciding which song each of you will download on Napster at school to make that perfect mix cd
>Not sharing your ICQ with all the cuties at school
>Not being able to inject and take over 90% of every websites out there because of security that is non existent
>Those late night irc chats

Truly the best of times.

160p animes

>What was 90s/early 2000s Internet like?

no niggers

Like the Golden Age of Sup Forums, except PG-13 instead of R

this,
I remember being on the bootleg warcraft 3 servers back in the day.

it was so fucking racist and white male dominated.

It was the best

It was great because you were just a sperm cell in your loser father ballsack

man oh man, I wish I still had tit scans from back in the day

I remember being trolled by goatse on slashdot. good times.

I used to sit in empty quake online maps and wait for someone to play with me

>tfw no one ever did :'(

Early dialup meant going onto
BBS: bulletin board server

To read short stories, leave msgs and play DOS games

Pretty much /pol with no colour photos
and m8s like OP photo - good times

B

IE was miracle, images extremely limited, Nobody believe could make with ads,Slow as Fuck.

I remember thinking the internet was a shitty fad that would die out and BBS would rule supreme forever, man I miss those days.

>>AOL

>>MSN messenger.

>tfw you'll never be able to go back to these simpler times

youtube.com/watch?v=hWq4DWfrpu8

Underage fags will never know this feel.

Finding out Dragon Ball GT actually exists, and not some school yard meme.

Not trolling your friends with whitehouse links on ICQ/MSN when parents where in the room or watching them.

What was that abbreviation for parents watching again?

It was possible to very easily meet REALLY fucking smart people because it took effort to get online.

Interacting with people online now feels like a literal knife in my heart when I think about it

AOL chatrooms
neopets
TV stations like nickelodean and cartoon network having extremely basic sites and then getting 1 or 2 flash games (dat gundam wing game amiright?)
dat coolmath4kids.com lemonade stand and lunar lander. only games I was allowed to play in school on the internet.

Then there were all these animations. I remember a bunch of stick figure animations of guys killing other games, and then tons of flash games of the sorts.

i could probably go on.
my extremely religious mother was really into rotten.com for a while. Which was interesting, almost like her version of Sup Forums.

It was a nation of educated affluent white people. It was a utopia.

>simpler times
> fucked up complicated interface

Best time was early highspeed, early 2000s or earlier if you were lucky.

Wild west, no MAFIAA or DMCA just free shit no worries. Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, newzbin, direct connect, FXP, XDCCs, then turrents came along and the SA filez forum was godlike along with suprnova etc etc.

It was nothing like Sup Forums
You weren't around back then, were you?

The Internet was full of middle class normies and their children. Now it's full of poor people and people with IQ hovering around 60-80. That includes Sup Forums
Most of the people I know from back then are either apolitical or leftists/feminists today.

>The sounds of Modem
That's why my ears are fuckt!!!

>If you weren't using the forums or chatrooms there really wasn't a whole lot to do online.

That and finding cheats for n64.

Seriously, did previous generations even have cheats? Like every goddamn game had them once the internet came out.

Back in highschool (14-15 years ago) I knew a guy who hacked the school server and set all the schools computer desktop backgrounds to Goatse.

I was a kid in the 90s and I'd sneak onto my parent's computer.

I remember fuckin...going to chat rooms. The security in them was a joke. If you fuckin put a character in that the site didn't recognize like an e with an accent it would make it so the moderators couldn't ban you.

I trolled the fuck out of those early chat rooms. Fun times.

dude, chatting with the QTs on aim/icq/msn was awesome. THeir boyfriends never even knew lol. being serious.

>not applying iron curtain to those iranian nuclear trucks and setting them off right after your nuke attack
>not having the chronosphere teleport enemy ore miners to the water so they'll sink
>not putting tanya on a chopper and have her have a ride through the map, inventing objectives for her to complete
>sniper ready

those were the days ma' nigga
those were the days

>calling warcraft 3 early internet

Get out, get out, get out

we had magazines, hotlines and game genie

Not heard of Game Genie?

I had an Action Replay for SNES and tried to use the Play As Bosses code. Never worked no matter how many I tried. It was like a myth, I miss those hardscrabble days before the Internet.

i miss crt monitors solely for it being a nice spot for my cat to chill

There used to be published cheat books for basically every game released at the time. They usually updated them a couple times a year or so. I never bought any but I knew a few friends who did.

*SF2

We had to write down or memorize them from magazines. I had a small pad with cheats to all my games.

I remember them being Libyan.

This. Better time back then.

Also: newsgroups

For the old weebs on here. Which animu message board did you guys used to post on?

Noated fag here.

I'd be very surprised if anyone remembered pic related.

In the 90's browsing the internet was kind of like drifting between small, private house parties each full of unique individuals who were willing to have a proper conversation with you. You could make legit friends who you kept in contact with for years, and everything felt like an adventure.

Now it's more like wandering between overcrowded cities where every face is the same and nobody cares for really interacting with anyone else. If you say something you will probably be ignored, or at best remembered for 30 seconds or a minute, before your voice fades back into the noise.

apn

>>Diablo II

>>Counter strike

if im not mistaken the libyan's special unit was the terrorist, which was infantry

only one I can find is PIR but that doesnt seem right

youtube.com/watch?v=mfMrVKnGzwg

It took an hour to download one picture to jerk off to.

OP:
Everyone else:
Sage and Migrate.

Fuck off you stupid fucking nigger.

Asheron's Call is finally shutting down at the end of this month. It hurts. :(

Holy shit, I actually remember buying one of those books and it was for n64 oddly enough.

It was amazing being one of the few Australians.

I remember playing age of empires on Microsoft gaming zone and being constantly abused for being a laggy cunt by Americans.

Now Australia had its own online gaming infrastructure and i never see Americans anymore

No phonesposters, less millenials and 90% of today's Sup Forums posters.

Warcraft 3? Bro if you think that was early internet you are a dumb faggot. Played Warcraft 2 online and that wasn't early either. Doom 2 death match bro here.

You basically just described WoW.

It was like DARPA and shit

ICQ was the shit

>downloading realplayer clips of Tenchi Muyo that took the entire night.

You don't need money to walk into a fucking library, user. What hellhole do you live in where you let those faggots try and assert shit like that?

16 color porn. fakes were more believable because it all looked like shit.

It was great. Almost nothing but smart people, as the dumbos were either trapped in AOL-hell or unable to get online at all. People writing fap stories that read like the old masters and evoke intense imagery and immersion. There are ancient archives around where you can still sample the old quality of "green".

No moderation. No up/down voting anywhere. No topic off limits. Even the most monstrous pervosity happening in searchable fashion. It's been hell watching "the lights go out" since Y2K onward.

The early internet was where I learned that monsters were real. And in charge of the world. I worry that the "new kids" are being too sheltered from learning the essential, horrible truth- But at least there's still Sup Forums.

nigga try diablo 1
even then

All I did back then was look for guides for PS1 games. Oh and anime ring sites. It took 2-3 minutes to load full screen images.

forums were really good back in those days... even early 2010 internet was better than how it is nowadays

yeah some always lagged for me=(

very very very slow. And almost exclusively text based.

It was limited to a certain audience, especially the gaming part(eg. warcraft 1+2+3, counterstrike in 99) so it was pretty okay.

On the other hand, dialup was fucking garbage.

I remember sitting in front of my computer for hours downloading porn with my dick out off Limewire.

Age of Mythology was pretty much my first experience in online gaming. Hours lost to that as well.

>tfw it was totally normal at the time to play a game with a dial up connection

>download a song from lime wire
>was actually scat porn with actually guy and his dog

Rinse and repeat with random porn after that.

c2002 here
everything was pretty random, nothing corporation owned like, most things where pulled out of nowhere and few pages look'd alike, also real OC everywhere. adding the fact that things werent connected like these days, say ... aside popular pages such as newgrounds, most of them only had 100-500 visitors, rarely ever hitting up 1k, and everytime a movie comes out there would be WMP and Winamp related skins.
> Slow as shit thats for sure

HOLY SHIT THAT GAME

Find out for yourself.

warnerbros.com/archive/spacejam/movie/jam.htm

It was stickdeath.com and pirating papa roach/disturbed/linkin park etc

on everyother website

Stumbling across a website that hasn't been updated since the 90s is one of the most depressing things in the world.

It's like finding the dead body.

Cheating wasn't a thing in the 70's and 80's, unless it was on arcade video games, or busting into a pinball machine to get free lives. We didn't spend all of our time playing video games, we were outside doing stuff.

It was actually pretty fun. You were able to find communities based on your common interests with others, Yahoo chat, irc, icq, battle.net or won.net, or those other ones, like the zone (msn?).

Also, if you couldn't find a fledgling community, you could just as easily build one by learning a little html and throwing up a geocities website, maybe make your own forum or meet people through a guestbook. He'll, I remember how exciting it was to watch your page counter increase as your site built a little traffic.

There were creepy people, and angsty teens online back then, but honestly it was so much better because the online community was still rather small relative to today. I didn't realize how retarded most people were until the entire country had internet and comment sections became a thing on news sites.

Holymotherfucking shit I definitely know this feel.

>the guy with a better than dial-up connection or nearest the servers would dominate everyone since they were always a half second slower to react than him
>if you were good, you were actually able to lead through lag and had to predict where someone would be before you could even be alerted to them

>spoiled cunts whine when 30 ping jumps to 80 now

It was horrible, I remember having a shared family computer so I had to print out "Asian busty girl" porn pics and stash them away in my room so I could jerk off later. And it took like a solid 2 min for a full picture to load so it was fucking precious, you don't know how easy you have it.

Everything was slower and things were more difficult to get. However, the culture was ten times better. Most people who used the internet back then were at least technically proficient to some degree, so there were fewer normies, women and niggers.
The various communities were also far more segregated and unique, because everyone visited different forums, mailing lists or BBSes. There were almost no huge, interconnected social media sites, and the ones that did exist, were mostly ridiculed for being the domain of computer illiterate kids.

It's amazing how much social media changed and corrupted the internet, particularly Google, Facebook and Youtube. Back then, you really did feel free, because you weren't tracked and no one cared what you did. Now I feel like someone's always looking over my shoulder.
