Most lower the sound to about the same level as perceived when you are wearing hearing protection. Still pretty loud, over 100db in most cases. Suppressors basically take gun shot noise from will definitely cause immediate hearing damage to less likely to get hearing damage.

They reduce a gunshot report from 140-190 decibels to 115-150. In other words, not much, but enough to protect your hearing and that of those around you from immediate damage. 115 db is still pretty loud.
