When in the early 18th century a black man finally made it to Austria (he, a slave boy, had been given as a gift to a princely family, but since there was no slavery he was raised and educated as part of the household), it was such an unheard novelty, he became an instant celebrity in Vienna. He lived a pretty privileged life as chief servant, had access to the highest circles, befriended important people, became a free mason, even married. He was a contemporary of Mozart, maybe even met him.
After his death he was stuffed and, wearing only a loincloth, put on display in a museum in Vienna, next to other stuffed, exotic animals. This happened in accordance with his wishes, as he was a man of the enlightened era.
Let this sink in: the first black man to make it to Vienna at the time Mozart was considered so unusual they stuffed him and put him in a museum.

I see it more as a reflection of the enlightened era: everything has to be collected, categorized, preserved, filed, then displayed for educational purposes; especially if a curiosity. He understood.
Progress was of utmost importance and not necessarily at odds with other ideals of the enlightenment, like worldwide fraternity, human rights and dignity, liberty. We're not doing people of the time justice by judging them by more modern sensitivities.
